Nearly 5.5 million yen was stolen from a supermarket in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture, on Monday night, police said Tuesday.
Police said a man entered the supermarket at around 10:20 p.m. and threatened a 50-year-old male employee with a kitchen knife, Sankei Shimbun reported. The store had closed at 9 p.m. The intruder told the employee to keep quiet unless he wished to be stabbed. He forced the employee to open the safe and then tied the man’s hands and legs together with adhesive tape. The robber fled the scene after stealing approximately 5.5 million yen in cash.
The employee was the only one in the store at the time. He had gone to check the employee lounge when he was accosted by the thief.
A night watchman discovered the bound employee about 90 minutes later.
The thief is described as being in his early 30s and about 160 cms tall. He was wearing a hood, a blue sweater and black pants and was carrying a black bag.

"Robbed" is the better word, the employee was at knifepoint and the store was robbed. The lead title gives an impression of a burglary instead of a person being attacked and robbed.

Nearly 5.5 mill? no exact number?

It's amazing how people with knives can commit this type of crime. I mean couldn't the employee just run away? If it was me i would take the chance that the robber wouldn't be able to accurately throw a knife and hit me...

Hope the successful robbery this time around wouldn't encourage other would-be robbers to hold up other places including the same supermarket.

Not if he's smart.

What if he had the knife to your throat, had you cornered or otherwise had some sort of a hold on you? Even if not, there's a good chance he could catch you if you run, especially inside a building. Knives are no less deadly than guns.

The guy just strolled in? Doors were unlocked or what. ?

inside job

very fishy...

Sounds like a good old fashion inside job!! One guy working alone after closing and just so happen to know the combination number to the safe. One guy with a knife and that one guy alone ties this employee up!! Ok end of story GUILTY!! Set up

If he let the attacker get close enough to get a hold of him, then not much he could have done, but if he had some distance in a grocery store, there are a million different things he could have used to fend off the attacker. Bottles of beer, drink bottles, fruits, cans, etc., all can be used as projectiles.

I'm sorry but if I'm being paid 800 yen an hour to close up shop, it leaves me with very little wiggle room to become a hero.

Did you read the article? 50 year old man....30's something man....don't know the details, but where you going to run to, the store was closed, which brings up another question, how'd the guy get in in the first place?
Shin Ra
30 year old was 160cm, didn't list the height for the older guy, but didn't know 50 also meant disabled...
to the knife section of the store to get my own weapon, or maybe the beer section and crack open two bottles...
I just figure after last month, they would know better, you know, like how one person with a knife was able to subdue four adults and tie them up and then go slash and kill 25 disabled people...

And what about 9 people stabbed in a mall in MN? Or the randomly stabbed folks in countless numbers of other places.
I was stabbed once when I was a teenager, collecting money on my paper route one afternoon and a guy came up to me showed a knife and demanded money, I was stuck in my tracks, but even then I was well over 6ft tall, and had experience in a number of childhood fist fights, the guy with the knife was a little guy, by comparison, I turned to run, and he swung his blade and I was stabbed , almost through my left upper bicep.
Easy to comment about why didn't he do this, or why didn't he do that, and infer about age not mattering, but when YOU are faced with it, and hopefully YOU never will, it takes time for the body and mind to react when someone is threatening you with a weapon. Some people CAN react and do what they need to do to defend themselves, not everyone can and to assume otherwise...well you know.

But Yubaru, JT posters are all ninjas who would never be victims in any situations ever, didn't you know that?
Shin Ra
But you were a teenager and using your argument that age matters, this is a completely different mindset compared to a 50 yold adult. And I've been in similar situations as well, but I ran and got away. But, lots of unknowns in the story so difficult to tell what the circumstances were. I still say run if you can and stay in place if you cant...
