Needles found in bread on two days in same Fukuoka supermarket

Sewing needles have been found inserted into bread products on two days this week at a supermarket in Fukuoka city, police said Friday.

Customers complained about finding the needles after purchasing the bread at the Sunny Akasaka supermarket in Chuo Ward on Aug 12 and Aug 15, Fuji TV reported. The customers — a 58-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man — said they found the needles after eating the bread. Neither of them suffered any injury.

Police said they are examining store surveillance camera footage to see if anyone tampered with products in the bakery section.

One particular supermarket three days apart sounds unlikely to be a manufacturing issue. More likely a mentally sick customer or employee.

Here is to hoping that it's due to some problem in the manufacturing process and not an individual tampering with the packages.

In my opinion. tampering with packaged food products is one of the most insidious forms of terrorism. We all have become so used to and expect our food supplies to be safe that when incidents like these occur it can cause a panic.

I hope the proper authorities find out the who, what, where, when, why and how ASAP.

Unhappy staff, unsatisfied customers, business rivals (via the Yakuza), and even mentally-ill person could be the culprit.

You are usually quite good with your comments, but this one is a tad far from reality. Of course it is some nutcase slipping needles into the bread. Needles are not used in any part of commercial bread manufacture, so how could it be an accident?

This is one of the reasons I have no qualms with security cameras being everywhere. “Turn the lights on and watch the roaches scurry!”

I don't think its a problem that has originated in the manufacturing of the bread, in the uk they have metal detectors inline with the bread packaging so it can detract metal object, should any thing drop off the processing machinery and I am sure that Japanese bread maker would have such devices in there plant. It sounds like some one has a grudge.

Sad.

Not sad, it's outright dangerous and sick.

We'd better be more careful when we buy a bread or two. At any rate, it's bothersome and uncomfortable. Hope the police catch the suspect soon.

I am in Fukuoka.

Some more details on this story would be greatly appreciated. Like what Super markets?

Joint? Romeil? Sunny?

What brand of bread? Royal? Yamazaki? Just a suggestion.

Oh, that is scary. I don't go to that particular store, but it's not far from where I live. I hope that the culprit is caught soon!

As in the article, "Sunny Akasaka supermarket in Chuo Ward." There is only one, and it's usually quite busy. If there is a loony sticking pins into bread, I doubt he/she is distinguishing between brands. Most likely a grudge against the store (and the world).

Probably bread that isn't in packaging so it would be quite easy to stick needles into. But the cameras everywhere will help catch the culprit who should be charged with attempted murder.

@Do the hustle - am thinking along the same line too. Just plain radiculious for it to have come from the manufacturing process. . Got to be some sicko . .
