Police said Sunday that three needles were found in bakery products at a convenience store in Nagareyama, Chiba Prefecture.
According to police, a customer reported that a needle was in a croquette roll that he had bought on Saturday morning. Shop staff checked other items on the same shelf and discovered two other items with needles inserted in them, TV Asahi reported.
Police said the needles were 3.5 centimeters long. Surveillance camera footage shows a man lingering in front of the items earlier on Saturday morning and are trying to identify him.

It's a matter of life and death in the manufacturing industry and logistics. Metal detectors are used in the distribution process. Check the video.

QA and metal detectors don't really do much if there's a guy walking around the store poking needles into the items though. Unless you're suggesting we get some attached to our mouths.

The guy has a weird hobby ,he probably hates pple or that store.

Yeah, Japan is a relatively safe country to live, but the criminals are cowardly pathetic! Last week, we had a guy slashing elementary school kids, the week before, a guy punching junior high school kids, the other day a weirdo attacked 65 year old man with a rubber hammer while he was taking a leak. Now, this one, which happens two or three times a year. All of them are just gutless!!!

This is bad!! It's one fear I have about the precooked food you always see in Japanese stores. I have often seen people touch food but not buy it or cough or sneeze on the food!! There are other dangers out there but I do agree that the needles are very very dangerous and the suspect I hope will be caught soon!!!

Damn....that is the last time I buy open products! I will have to bring a metal detector when I get sushi from now on! Reminds me of school days when people used to put razor blades on the slippery slide....lots of sick freaks out there!

Convenience store food? A scary thought.

Some of these convenience stores sell local items.... especially cooked / baked items than can go bad quickly. There must be a decent amount of local competition to get items on a shelf at these local convenience stores. If someone were to become sick or injured due to something in the food it might help a competitor.
