New Tokyo Metropolitan Police Commissioner Yoshiki Okita told a news conference this week that his goal is to make Tokyo the safest city in the world in the lead-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Okita voiced his vision of forming “a dynamic and tough Metropolitan Police Department," but was vague on details, Fuji TV reported Wednesday.
Okita, who entered the National Police Agency (NPA) in 1981, has previously served as general manager of the Aichi Prefectural Police and chamberlain of the Imperial Household Agency. In May, Okita was appointed as chief director of the NPA security sector for the G7 Ise-Shima Summit and was in charge of security when U.S. President Barack Obama visited Hiroshima.

Please return trash cans to the parks and train station platforms. That will actually and really clean up Tokyo.

I know I have an obsession with how ridiculous Japanese police behave but Tokyo is already probably the safest big city in the world...owing not to the cops but Japanese society -
It'll be the same for the Olympics and no doubt this old timer will take credit for it while it'll be the citizens who deserve the credit - as people wrote above, hopefully this doesn't mean more spot checks - I caught one after being in Tokyo about an hour! !

I just hope this doesn't mean more spot checks for foreign IDs by the J-cops.

Tokyo is already one of the most safest city in the world compared to other places but it's crazy considering the population is 13 million, comparable to the size of some countries...

Tokyo already is one of the safest cities in the world. I think this old fella is just spouting off to make it look like he is doing his job.

Good luck with that...

The odd over-reported murder aside, the only way to clean up Tokyo would be to get stuck into organized crime...which won't happen of course. Nice words though, it got his face on the tv at least. I'm sure that was all he was after.

Just do the Japanese thing and don't report any of the crimes and hope the gullible gaijins don't figure it out!!

In any event, let's look forward to Okita's continued activity as a new Tokyo Metropolitan Police Commissioner making Tokyo the safest city in the world.
since1981
That's easy. Just keep burying police reports and turning a blind eye to minor offenses.

It will be.
