"We also believe that these two U.S. citizens, one a decorated Special Forces veteran, and the other an impressive young man with no criminal history, should not be held in custody during a pandemic while these issues are being litigated,” he said in a statement."
Almost a verbatim of the usual defence strategy in the UK.
Should also have added they've got a lone elderly and invalid mother, for which they alone bear a duty of care.
Or pre-school kids, (preferably) with special needs; a pregnant wife who would suffer unreasonable detriment if Bail is not granted.
And many other fibs.
The defence can be extremely creative.
Just give them an inch....

It's not like they don't know how to flee a country or anything... ;)

These two are heroes, nothing less.

If bail-jumping isn't a crime, then what are they guilty of?
Random
If bail-jumping isn’t a crime, why did he have to get in the box?

You know, it’s like the saying goes (And something I said on here before) “Two wrongs do not make a right”

@strychnine @BigYen very good points by the both of you. That’s why obviously the judge denied them of bail.

So American authorities are detaining two of their citizens for what may or may not have been a crime in Japan. Ok, in that case, send back that American woman to the UK. You know, the one who killed a boy because she didn't know what side of the road she was supposed to drive on and then fled back to US, falsely claiming diplomatic immunity.

These two gentlemen did what the thought was perfectly legal, now they may have been wrong!! or may have gotten the wrong advice and that is up to the court to decide.
I do not believe a decorated special forces father will endanger and ruin the life of his some for Mr G or his money.
gogogo
If no crime has been committed why are they being held?
TARA TAN KITAOKA
I can only see abuse of power in this case. Japan wants face that badly. What secrets are they hiding ??!

There's a movie,Midnight Express, that exposed the blatant human rights infringements of Turkey's justice system.
After the movie Turkey revised and renewed its Justice System grounds up.
I'm looking forward the Japanese Midnight Express.

It is going to be a very very long wait. It is never gonna happen because there is a twist of nationalism in it. very few experts are bold enough to speak out and media is just too scared or uninterested in the truth.
