The number of children younger than 18 who became victims of crimes through use of social media reached a record high during the first half of 2015, according to a report released this week by National Police Agency (NPA).
The NPA said 796 children were involved in criminal activities via SNS from January to June, Fuji TV reported. The figure was 14% higher than the same period in 2014, and the highest since 2008, the year the NPA started collecting data.
Most of the crimes involved minors getting involved with adults, either for sexual relations or porn, through social media including Facebook, Twitter, LINE, and other sites.
Police are asking chat site operators to take preventive measures by verifying the age of new users.

With the whole maid cafe / idol scene fueling this kind of behavior, it's no surprise crimes these children are on the rise. As long as mid-aged men seek "enjokosai" and as long as some of these minors are willing to take their cash and or "gifts". . . . . the problem will never go away.

That's three records broken in one year: First Child Porn, Then Child Abuse, Now Child SNS Crimes! Very Very sad.

Get real. In some cases, cops are often the perpetrators. If not through sns, they employ of her methods.

Julian Genesis, Couldn't have agreed more.
With the ageing population and the decline in birth rate/procreation, what are the current generation adults to do?
Some fantasias over anime, orthers Wed anime, but the majority of these sort of people who have secluded themselves turn to this kind of crime, abusing children.
My respects to all those who are parents and have a famaly of their own in Japan, although in the minority, please continue to set a prime example, hopefully these ill types would one day awaken from their ordeal.
Technology is good and has its benefits yet, it is up to us as parents to educate our children of the danger and threat of such websites and the Internet in general. In the end, there is only so much the government can do, the problems too big to police.
