No. of reported stalking, domestic abuse cases in first half of year highest ever

The National Police Agency says the number of stalker and domestic violence cases reported to police during the first six months of this year is the highest ever.

According to the report released by the NPA earlier this week, the number of stalker-related consultations police dealt with nationwide between Jan 1 and June 30 was 1,166, nearly twice as high as previous years, and the highest ever recorded since statistics started being kept in 2002, TBS reported.

Within the Tokyo area, 187 stalking cases were reported, a nearly 25% increase over 2013. Police said some high-profile cases that ended in stalking victims being murdered have led more people to consult them.

The NPA report also cited an increase in "revenge porn," where men post inappropriate pictures of their former lovers online. Fifty-five such cases were reported to police in the January-June period.

Similarly high were the number of domestic violence cases, reaching 1,966, TBS reported. Police said that, as in the case of stalking, more victims of domestic abuse are coming forward to report the violence.

If my sister had come to Tokyo and been groped on a train, heaven help the man! There's no reason why Japanese women have to put up with abuse. As well it may also help others around indicate there's a problem and help out. It's only the 21st century. This needs to become unacceptable at some point

Fadamor, I am looking for underlying causes to this upon which solutions can be made. This is because I want to see fewer stalkings, and also fewer rapes and murders.

You however seem to be playing the blame game and simply looking for people to vilify. And so you construe my search for underlying causes as "justifications" for stalking. Is it your belief that twisting my words and thoughts and vilifying me will lead to fewer stalkings? Or is it that you simply do not care how many women get stalked so long as you can continue to play the blame game?

Since when does a woman saying "No" justify being stalked, harassed, and even injured/killed?

It never has. But it is a sad fact that the more the women of society say no, the more bad things will happen to them. And I expect that you will quite willfully interpret that last sentence in the wildest, sickest way possible.

I am not suggesting that women become free prostitutes, as I am sure your mind instantly jumped to. I am suggesting that it seems women are more inhibited than they were in the past. This could be a cause of "westernization", and indeed, the very first sentence of the very first post in this thread was a call for women to be more inhibited. In may ways, female sexual inhibitions are being promoted. And sorry, but I believe that that has led directly to an increase in stalking.

Like it or not, men and women must work together to achieve a better society. If stalking is increasing, something is out of whack. I cannot say for sure if female behavior has led to an increase in bad male behavior, but I do know from experience that suggesting women might have the power to reverse this trend will be met with instant unthinking denials. Truly, it its as if some people want to see women victimized just so they can enjoy the luxury of condemning men.

We can also just have a look at reports of sexual frequency and also the birth rate. Both very low, and women are the gate keepers of these things as much as men are the key masters. I think both men and women are responsible in their own ways, but, I do believe female culpability is too often neglected.

...Translation: "Women are just as at fault for being stalked because they don't let men bang them often enough."

Crush Them continues with the excuse-making for men who commit crimes against women. Since when does a woman saying "No" justify being stalked, harassed, and even injured/killed?

many people face rejection and unhappy marriages but DON'T resort to criminal behavior

@Fouxdefa In a perfect world, everyone would be like that. When you find that perfect world, please give me a call!

In the world I live in, there is a point where people start to snap. I just think its a good idea to try to keep as many people as possible away from that point.

Its sort of like I can legally walk around and insult everyone I see. When somebody punches me, I might even successfully sue for damages. But would it not be nice to just avoid the whole thing?

Crush Them, many people face rejection and unhappy marriages but DON'T resort to criminal behavior like stalking or DV. It is inexcusable behavior. I think the article's conclusions may be right, that the increase in reported incidents are due to recent fatal cases that are making people realize they are in a dangerous situation and that it's better to tell someone than to "gaman" until they are injured or killed.

Japanese morality is based on public shame rather than private guilt--in reporting incidents the media needs to subject perps to public disgrace and encourage current victims to report rather than suffer in silence.

Tip of the iceberg but glad more women are speaking out - now if only stalking laws and the cops were more effective to prevent women from becoming victims.

I would think that after hearing about how ineffective the Japanese police are, the women who are being stalked do not go to the police for help. If you read the news out of Japan and how many women were killed even after reporting it to the Japanese police, you will see that there is a large number of victims who depended on them and the Japanese police did nothing to assist them. So, this in my mind and in the minds of many other people here in Japan, is not true.

Glad to see more gals speaking up. Sadly, I doubt if it is gonna stop any of these lunatics from stalking girls.

Fact is, if these men are not mature enough to interact normally with the opposite sex or deal with rejection in an adult fashion then they need to get professional help.

@375sensei At this point it may be true. But after going through an education system that not only monopolizes their time, loading them with homework during a ridiculously short summer vacation and gender segregrated club activities that eat up their weekends, and parents who send them to cram schools after school, is it any wonder Japanese men have grown up ignorant of what it takes to date and now have great difficulty dealing with women except for the very "direct" approach? Its not like there is a course on how to have relations with the opposite sex in public schooling.

Meanwhile, women are less and less tolerant of male fumbling and also seem to want more and more of the romanticized images they see on TV. Yet, their faces are constantly buried in their smart phones and you cannot even make eye contact which is not only a TV romance stable, its reality that things start with eye contact.

This country seems intent on imploding.

Crush Them, if I've understood the jist of what you've written, your point is that over the years Japanese women have become "colder" and less receptive to men's advances and some men have resorted to stalking women after having been rejected so often. Are you saying part of the blame lies with, as you put it, these "Japanese women who just seem to get colder and more unfriendly with each passing day:" Fact is, if these men are not mature enough to interact normally with the opposite sex or deal with rejection in an adult fashion then they need to get professional help.

Crush Them, woman does not owe those men...

Ladies, don't ever allow you naked self to be photographed.

@MarkG Complete wrong end of the stick. Establishing such rigid sexual inhibitions will only make things worse.

Revenge porn is for the lamest of the lame. The most pathetic of the pathetic.

I still have some choice pictures of 3 lovers. I have never so much as showed anyone. If one of them got famous and I were offered a million dollars for the pics, I would not sell. None of the women had to say anything to me. The contract was implied. Those pictures were private between me and them. Its obvious. Any man who shows the pics has no honor and is not a real man as far as I am concerned.

What needs to happen is that society needs to shame the showers of the pics because its only them who deserves the shame. Friends and even current lovers need to be understanding if they see such pics. We all have histories. Its the exposers who are the scum.

In short, all of society needs to be more tolerant of nudity, sex and sexual histories. It needs to be more condemning of low life dishonorable people who put private pictures on the net or show their buddies without consent. If any man ever tried to show me naked pictures of his girlfriend without her express permission, I would not hesitate to point out how scummy that is.

That is an interesting take 375sensei. My first thought as I read the news is that this is also being driven by Japanese women who just seem to get colder and more unfriendly with each passing day. Seems to me Japanese male social skills were always abysmal, and its hard to imagine they actually dropped more, so yeah, I think women are changing, and not necessarily for the better. Reporting stalking is good. However, being stuck up and/or frigid is not.

We can also just have a look at reports of sexual frequency and also the birth rate. Both very low, and women are the gate keepers of these things as much as men are the key masters. I think both men and women are responsible in their own ways, but, I do believe female culpability is too often neglected.

Did I just say that women should date the first creep that buys her a drink? No. But I know that thanks to the popularity of male-hating in current English speaking society, it will be acted as if I did. No. I am talking about women who got plenty of offers and turned them all down, or those who got no offers because they keep all males at arms distance. Am I blaming the victim? Not necessarily. I think a lot of these stalkers were refused repeatedly by other women then started stalking women who deserve no blame, such as women who actually gave them a chance then wanted to break up.

Similarly high were the number of domestic violence cases, reaching 1,966, TBS reported. Police said that, as in the case of stalking, more victims of domestic abuse are coming forward to report the violence.

If only the police would have responded all those years ago when I was being abused... starting from the day after returning from our honeymoon...

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

In the past, women here in Japan would just "gaman" and suffer in silence but the increasing number of people coming forward will empower even more to report these cases. Life is just too short to let these gutless bullies get away with these crimes unpunished.

Japan's not even safe on the domestic and stalking front.

Ladies, don't ever allow you naked self to be photographed. Even if 'he is the one'. He doesn't NEED your picture and you never want to be forever in cyberspace. I wouldn't want to see my mom or even a friends mom 20 years later online.

Guys who post them, please have some decency and respect for yourself and others.

Girls who don't mind if they are there, your choice/risk.
