Well, that didn't take long...
Was he unemployed?
Schopenhauer
Okinawans don't like Americans and Japanese. We are getting weary about them.
CrazyJoe
Good this idiot was arrested before carrying out his threat.
nath
Surprise, surprise, it is an anti-baser.
kwatt
Just one person! He seems to have bluffed it, but it's a crime anyway.
ReformedBasher
I believe you forgot the word "some" at the beginning of your sentence.
Do you think making death threats will make things better?
thepersoniamnow
If he used a pay phone can we assume that the police can easily trace any call and find surveillance footage of whomever they want?
toshiko
@reform: Read history of Ryukyu why Okinawan people dislike mainland Japanese.
@thepersin: about all of phone threatenings are traced and get caught. But people who do phone threatenings are usually not bright. Phone companies cooperate with LEA request and that was not new. Even in 1990's phone tracing was everywhere.
Jay Manjarres
If he used a pay phone can we assume that the police can easily trace any call and find surveillance footage of whomever they want?" WHERE WOULD HE EVER FIND A PAY PHONE?
Commodore Shmidlap (Retired)
What an oaf. Glad they nabbed him.
ReformedBasher
Why do you think I haven't? Or visited / lived there / talked with Okinawan people? You assume too much.
By the way, generalization where not quantifiable does not lend strength to an opinion.

@Joselito
Not all Okinawans are men.
Yokota
@ scipantheist "Surprise, surprise, it is an anti-baser."
I know what you mean, they had one near the off base housing in oki_no_no who would leave his dog droppings in the front walkway, everyday. The Local keystones, would do nothing about it. So the US family moved on base. They said the water tasted much better also.
toshiko
@reform> From your comment.aaaaaai knew you are not familiar with history regarding Ryukyu and Shimazu relations expanded to their anri Japanese feelings. You wrote some Japanese. Also how mainland Japanese feels about Okinawans.
Yubaru
At just about every convenience store and only there, otherwise they are pretty much non-existent on island, compared to the "old" days.
Hence the cameras too.

Let's see how the anti base and current government officials "spin" this one. They really screwed up on this one.
Wc626
I wonder how many anti-base Japanese are proficient in making explosives, ied's and such.
hidingout
Exactly. Time and again the anti-base folks seem to think they can dictate defense policy to the nation. Now they have resorted to (threats of) violence. Dangerous lot that.
People who live in Okinawa - no matter how long their forefathers may have lived there - are now citizens of Japan. The word Okinawan exists only in so far as the word Tottorian or Aomorian exists. They are all Japanese. I think a lot of people in Japan are "getting weary about" the NIMBY attitude and the constant moaning from Okinawa prefecture.
We all know the history thanks. Okinawa is not special when it comes to having its native population absorbed by a bigger and more powerful group. Everyone who has ever taken one history lesson knows this. There are countless examples from all over the globe. Nothing about Okinawa makes it a special case - other than their inability to recognize reality even now.

That doesn't make threatening phone-calls or bomb threats OK, though.
YuriOtani
Welcome to the Orwellian World! Wonders if the Americans are behind this foul deed.
DaDude
Because one man and some protesters represent an entire prefecture's thinking? Thanks for enlightening us.
japan4life
Okinawa is a special case and no Mainland Japanese should ever forget it. Okinawa was sacrificed during WWII to protect the Mainland and is still being sacrificed today to protect the Mainland. And the Okinawan people are rewarded for their sacrifices by being the poorest prefecture in Japan and having things forced on them that they do not want. If you want to hear complaining and moaning, just try to relocate a U.S. base from Okinawa to the Mainland. The Mainland wants the protection but does not want to host the bases.
smithinjapan
YuriOtani: "Wonders if the Americans are behind this foul deed."
Only you would wonder that, Yuri. The rest of the world knows full well who the perpetrator was as well as whom the intended victims were. You don't do Okinawans any justice when you try to reverse it, Yuri. You're just going to have to swallow the fact that it was an Okinawan against the bases who committed this 'foul deed'.
Anyway, this kind of guy sounds to me like the typical nutter who makes death threats anonymously with no intention of acting on them (just making noise), but the death threats are serious enough alone to warrant jail-time and for police to keep a close eye on him then and after, especially threats against national interests and international agencies on domestic soil.

Toshiko,
Yes, in studying about Japan History on and off for 40 years, I've never heard of Satusma province. Despite visiting Kagoshima to do research and having a friend who is a descendant of the Shimazu clan.

@yuriotani
Long time, no see. I missed your vitriol hate towards all things America!
And @toshiko, you wrote this reply when the threat was first reported:
toshiko MAR. 18, 2015 - 07:23AM JST
@tinawatanabeMAR. 17, 2015 - 06:22PM JST It's hard to believe any Japanese wants to hurt Ms. Kennedy.
tina: the article stated a man spoke in English. A man. The article does not say Japanese.
...So, @toshiko, do you want to follow up on your initial comment?
toshiko
@harv: .So, @toshiko, do you want to follow up on your initial comment?
Yes, A man called. He spoke in English, The article stated a man spoke in English.
harv: go read the article, Are you claiming A woman spoke in Japanese???
harvey pekar
Hi, @toshiko
Thanks for the reply. You're right. No where in the article does it state a woman spoke in Japanese. touché. You got me there.

@Reformer: One of my classmate's father, Shimazu was a transportation ministry official before Sato became. Her home had a full of her family archives; Instead of other brainy students whose graduation thesis were bragging of Boshin war and Shoin, I chiose her family;s hand written record as I was not an academic type student,

A few days ago, CBS (USA) reported this and also showed video of the face slashing scenes in Korea Station and guest analysts did not blame Korea or Japan or Okinawa but suggested US should restudy its East Asian policies.

What was the Okinawa governors response to this incident?
