There's an info missing in the article: the attacker had complained one year earlier about noises during tthe bbq meetings. RIP, anyway. Too young to die this way.

I have noticed a significant percentage of people here don't like it when others enjoy themselves or have some success.

And some even lash out, this seems to be one of those cases

and sometimes that is too bad in Japan that you can't just have a bbq at any park, beach or public space. You have to either fight for a position at a designated bbq spot or have it at your tiny yard while worrying about your neighbors' feelings.

Bang on. The same louts that scream at others for having fun in a park are the loudest at enkais and sing aloud at hanami, etc.

I agree with zilchi. But every summer I have annoying loud crap music all night, bbqs that dump their garbage on the beach and jet skis and wake boarders (drunk), breaking laws and endangering lives. I call the police and local council. But nothing ever happens. If the guy is loopo, then it pushed him over the edge. He should spend the rest of his life in a sanitarium.

Such disturbing incidents are very unfortunate however they are also very rare. Visitors to Japan should be reassured that Japan is a very safe country.

Safe place for sure, but when someone goes off the rails, they really go off the rails.

Um. The BBQ party that would have otherwise been fun turned sour. Hope other injured victim gets back on his feet ASAP.

And I had a yen for every time unemployed people were demonised in print/comments etc, I'd be twice as rich.

What a horrible thing!  BBQ's are some of the most enjoyable events, and for someone to just walk in and ruin it for everyone by killing someone is just awful.

Forgive the snarkiness, but WOW, really? But my question is, does a mentally disturbed person know they are of need of help themselves? Just because the people around him think he is disturbed does that give society the right to lock him up because he seems off?

Not to mention that the cops, could very well have used the mental illness reason as an excuse to explain something they don't know the answer to themselves.

Hell half the elected officials in this country fit that bill, but are they getting the help they need? No they aren't and "bad" things are happening there too!

Is it just me ? or these past few weeks, everyday there's someone stabbed, slashed, groped, burned, hit by a car. "Safe" Japan just seems like a myth now ...

I have annoying neighbors who hold a BBQ in their parking space a few times a year and it's loud, smokey, and annoying as hell (it sounds like they are in my apartment!), but never would I ever consider doing anything to infringe on their fun since it is during the day and they are mostly minding their own business. In fact, I had just bought a bunch of meat from a butcher shop not long before one of the BBQs and took them two racks of spare ribs one time, saying "have fun". They asked me to join but I couldn't, and later even apologized if they were ever too loud. Point is, if you have trouble with neighbors try talking and being nice. May not always work, and perhaps the police need to do a little more about the whole "wa" thing when it doesn't, but these wackos really, REALLY need to learn! I mean, does the guy think his prison cellmate(s) are going to be more considerate? Life will be less stressful? Did he think stabbing the guy was just a different way of saying hello?

So many lunatics. Lock him up for life.
