Police said Monday they have arrested an Osaka government office worker for allegedly stabbing a newspaper delivery woman in the back on Sunday morning.

According to TV Asahi, the incident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. in Osaka's Higashi-yodogawa. A 58-year-old newspaper delivery man told police he heard a woman screaming. He said he then saw the newspaper delivery woman, 46, being chased along the street by the assailant, TV Asahi reported.

The man gave chase on his bicycle and subdued the assailant.

Police said the woman was stabbed twice in the back, but her injuries are not life-threatening.

Police said the assailant is an Osaka government health and welfare office worker who has been on leave for the past three weeks due to depression.

Mexico, maybe thats exactly what he wanted. What happened to the good old days of takn your own life? This country is slowly turning into the west.

I personally don't blame the guy at all. He's probably very ill from the pressures from his job. He should have really been put under observance by the very department he worked for. Did the j-gov even think to get him some help instead of letting him brew at home for 3 weeks until he finally snapped....very ironic story indeed, and it just further confirms this society's attitude towards the mentally ill.

Junk mail?

Well, to be fair we dont actually know if he was getting help or not, but I would bet he wasnt. Sending someone with depression home on sick leave, where they are outside their normal routine, unlikely to be making human contact outside their immediate family if there are any, and no recovery plan is only going to make things worse in my experience.

No excuse for attacking someone though, but I think in this case calls for the death penalty are a little extreme! Calls for hospitalisation might be a better option - this has obviously now gone beyond outpatient treatable psychosis.

Maybe he was thoroughly sick and tired of hearing her noisy little Cub/scooter being revved at 5-30 every morning.

Poor woman just doing her job and attacked, doubt she will ever feel comfortable walking on the street again. Throw a stone in a pond and the ripples spread.

By the sounds of it, I think we can all agree that this man was chronically depressed. I am not defending his actions; I agree that it was wrong and uncalled for. But working where he was,he probably had to deal with mentally ill people everyday, until he himself became ill. I know for a fact that a lot of social workers and psychiatrists have their own psychiatrists so that they can make sure that they do not fall into depressions themselves. Was this provided for this guy?

Lastly, people suffering from chronic depression should not just be sent home to deal with their own problems by themselves. A depressed person alone for three weeks by himself is extremely dangerous, and should never happen.

And yes, I know that I am making a lot of assumptions when I say that this guy was by himself, but at the same time, I can't believe that a person who's tried to stab a postal worker with a 60cm sword was being cared for by anyone.

^oops got my stories mixed up..no 60cm sword...but a knife...

From health and welfare, suffering from depression and stabbing someone.. The definition of an oxymoron.

Cue the Misato copy-cat toorimas!

Kudos to the delivery guy! Taking on a knife-wielding nutcase is not something to be done lightly. And at 58 he is not in his prime anymore. Good job!

Ah, yes! Safety Japan? It is a relatively safe place unless you run into one of the 30% of adults that are nuts!

30% geez that's being generous l would have said more like 50 - 60%

Sorry but I do hope they hang this scum ASAP!!

I think the real story here is the heroism of the delivery man. He may well have saved that woman's life!

In another country, he might receive some sort of award. Here, he will be quietly forgotten.

Then people will complain that Japanese don't help strangers!
