Osaka man arrested after sharing futon with dead girlfriend’s body for five nights

On the morning of Nov 9, officers from the Osaka Prefectural Police Department’s Hirakata precinct responded to an emergency call that had been placed from within the city. Arriving at the home where the caller had contacted them from, they discovered the body of a 44-year-old woman from Osaka City who had been involved in a romantic relationship with the home’s resident, a 48-year-old security guard.

At some time earlier this month, the woman had come over to stay overnight at her paramour’s place for an as-yet undetermined number of nights. However, according to the man, her physical condition began to deteriorate, though she did not see a doctor for a medical examination or treatment, and during the night on Nov 4, she passed away in her sleep. “On the night of the 4th, her body became cold,” the man said in a statement to the police. “I didn’t know what do to.”

It’s something that would cause a great deal of shock to anyone, but the man claims to have been so mentally and emotionally crippled by the incident that he kept his lover’s lifeless body in his home for five days after her death. It wasn’t until the morning of November 9 that an acquaintance of his happened to stop by and spotted the woman’s body, still clothed in her pajamas, in the man’s futon, where he was sleeping next to her (whether the acquaintance gained access to the man’s home while he was asleep or was able to see the body through an outside window has not been specified by the police).

An autopsy is planned for the woman’s body, in an attempt to determine whether she was suffering from any illnesses or to otherwise shed light on how she died. Meanwhile, the man has been arrested on charges stemming from his failure to report the incident and/or get her medical treatment if it was apparent that she was in danger. At the moment, however, the police don’t appear to be looking at him as a murder suspect, despite his apparent lack of discomfort in spending night after night sharing his futon with a corpse.

I suppose to him she wasn't a "corpse", but someone he loved.

And "paramour"? Really?

Well, at least he didn't "abandon" the body. I'm glad to see the police didn't slap him with that ridiculous charge.

I could see tons of possible scenarios here. There could definitely be a chance of foul play, but I could also see someone so stricken with grief at the loss of a loved one that they couldn't think straight.

I am curious to see the autopsy report.

Sleeping next to a dead person, No More Scary or disgusting than the way this article was written

Ewww. Sleeping next to a corpse is about as bad a night as I can imagine. The smellmust have been pretty rank by the last night.

I'm wondering how long he would have left the body there if his acquaintance hadn't discovered it. I sincerely hope this doesn't turn out to be some kind of gross necrophiliac scenario.

I don't know what to say about this story, but I've got a sudden urge to stick on a bit of Slayer.

I found it uncomfortable sleeping next to somebody with Rigormortis , that's why I got divorced and married a warm blooded Philippine lady

euww ...gross...sick...unbelieveable...

While the individual story has yet to be explained, people's reaction to someone wanting to remain with the body of a loved one after that person has died, is very - unpleasant.

There are many cases of people gaining comfort from spending time with the body of their loved one rather than knowing the body is locked up in a dark cold metal container in a morgue. Parents choose to keep their child're body at home for some time, and it helps them grieve.

It is probably present day society's fastidiousness and distancing from death, that makes people react so childishly, but I for one would not appreciate anyone saying "EUWW!" about someone I love because they are dead and I want to have physical proximity to their body.

Again, we don't know the details of this case, but the likelihood that he was a necrophiliac is far less than he was just scared, sad, in shock, and lost. Just as people whose ageing parents or adult children die at home, often don't tell anyone because they are at a loss and griefstricken.

Dan Lewis: Well, at least he didn't "abandon" the body. I'm glad to see the police didn't slap him with that ridiculous charge.

Well, I'm sure, he will be charged with unlawful keeping corpse at home and sleeping with corpse.

Does it count if your S.O. is dead on this inside?

Okay this story is just like out there!!! I wonder if he was talking to her the whole time? Still shaking my head on this one.

''Sharing?''

only two realities. he's sick in the head, or he couldn't except the loss of a loved one. My friend embalmed their pet dog and have in in their tatami room.

Sharing the futon with the girlfriend's body for five nights? Unbelievable! If I were him, I could never share the futon with the dead body. Let alone fall asleep.

It’s only ridiculous if you don’t speak Japanese and are going on the English translation that doesn’t carry the nuance that Japanese does.

Try learning Japanese and you’ll be less frustrated reading the news.

If only I understood Japanese as well as you, Strangerland... ※sigh※ So you're saying that the Japanese meaning of "corpse abandonment" isn't ridiculous? Perhaps you could explain why this man wasn't charged for it?

So you're saying that the Japanese meaning of "corpse abandonment" isn't ridiculous?

That's correct. It makes sense in Japanese.

Perhaps you could explain why this man wasn't charged for it?

No clue. I haven't talked with anyone even remotely connected to the decision.

To be that lonely is sad.

Ironically, one of the few times the charge seems appropriate. (At least, at this point in their investigation.)

Oh, and when I said "the woman was obviously one them" when I said she needed help, I meant physically... although her taste in men obviously begs question. I did not in any way mean mentally in her case. The man is sick, for sure.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Sick. Some people need serious help. The woman was obviously one of them, and if it’s revealed that she suffered from something that could have been addressed had she or the man acted, I hope he goes to prison. Needless to say, if the autopsy shows murder I hope he goes away for life.

Sleeping next to a dead person! There is no excuse it's one of those social norms that are taboo. Mental stress, come on 99% of people would have mental stress sleeping next to a dead person. Sick and of need of serious maturity growth.
