Ozawa says aides' convictions 'unbelievable' in a democracy

Ichiro Ozawa, former president of the Democratic Party of Japan has finally broken his silence over the recent guilty verdicts for three of his former aides, calling the decision 'unbelievable' in a democracy.

The Tokyo District Court on Sept 26 gave suspended sentences to Tomohiro Ishikawa, Takanori Okubo and Mitsutomo Ikeda for falsifying financial reports of Rikuzankai, Ozawa's political fund management organization.

Although mired in the controversy of financial irregularities for some weeks, sources close to Ozawa say he was expecting not-guilty verdicts and was shocked at the outcome.

Ozawa had declined to speak in public about the verdicts until he was interviewed online over the weekend. Ozawa strongly criticized the verdicts, saying, "It's unbelievable that this can happen in a democratic country, even though there was no evidence."

He went on to say, "I am being made a scapegoat in a political game." When asked if he had been asked to run for the leadership position he responded, "If I do run, I don't want to be the kind of leader that shirks his responsibilities and tries to cling on to power."

Ozawa is currently awaiting his own trial, which opens on Oct 6. He is accused of conspiring with the former aides.

Sources within the DPJ told the press that under Ozawa's strategy, the three former aides would have been found innocent, he himself would have been acquitted and he would have gone on to win the DPJ presidential election next summer.

"When the false charge is cleared, and if I have public expectations on my shoulders at the time, I will run for the DPJ presidential election," Ozawa was quoted as telling a lawmaker.

He is so arrogant and obnoxious he only believes what he says or thinks. Everything else is not important to him. Hence he finds the verdicts unbelievable. The guy is just 'one' of the many cancer cells that is eating and destroying Japan.

Ummm, Ozawa-kun, it's BECAUSE the nation is a democracy that these men were found guilty. Having them let off simply because of some power-jockey who thinks he runs things would make it less so.

Ozawa, what's 'unbelievable' is how closely you resemble a toad.

Plenty of people are languishing in Japanese jails having been convicted with no evidence, where is Mr Ozawa's concern for them?

Tell us where you got the Y400,000,000 from Ozawa.

“It’s unbelievable that this can happen in a democratic country, even though there was no evidence.”

This quote makes me sick. Ozawa has done his darndest over the last two decades to eliminate any real form of democracy in Japan. He wants a country ruled by a political elite who don't answer in the slightest to the people and are mostly consumed by raising funds from Japan Inc. to feather their own personal nests. His arrogance is almost immeasurable.

of course he is right. in a democracy he should be convicted and not the scapegoat aides

What Ozawa is saying is tantamount to "you can do anything you want, as long as you don't leave (behind) evidence".

To me Ozawa looks like a crook, sounds like one, and from all I read is one. Can't stand the guy, and hate the way he attacked Kan. He represents everything bad about Japanese politics.

But .. in a way I envy his confidence and ability to not care about what anything thinks. If only the good guys had half of his drive.

Ozawa wears a leisure suit from what I read on another site. I looked it up. So funny. Such bad taste.

Democracy!! What democracy!! Japan acts like its a democracy but when it comes to push and shoving, the term democracy is thrown out the window. Especially when it comes to foreigners living in Japan. Seems like Japan has a lot of laws that they are not even following themselves. Here we have the Japanese government implementing laws to protect the people, but the laws that they implement are not being enforced at all. Ozawa is one of those that act like he is following the laws of the land when behind closed doors, he is cheating everyone that he can cheat. He is a disgrace to Japan and the Japanese people for just being in the publics eye. He should be thrown into prison for 99 years and be treated like a criminal in dirty bed sheets. Hes a total joke!!

Personally I doubt Ozawa understands what democracy means.

Personally I doubt Ozawa understands what democracy means.

Yes he does. What he thinks and believes is right, and you are always wrong. That is democracy Ozawa style.

I don’t want to be the kind of leader that shirks his responsibilities and tries to cling on to power.

Go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200

makes me sick to see the face this guy.

I see american and japanese politicians are pretty much onagi right now.

i'm tired of listening to his bs. i say let him be prime minister, fail miserably and get run out of office like all the others.

Maybe Ozawa made sure that the evidence of his wrongdoings is well hidden and difficult to find.

However, if this were not a democracy, but a country nearby like China, probably it would mean "kubi" as happened recently.

Unbelievable that he has to face the same scrutiny as others is what he really means.

Regardless of party of policy affiliation, we should all agree that we need this guy as PM like we need another hole in our head(s).

Just like a good father figure.

What an arrogant, self-serving, lying, arsehole, that can't see the forest for the trunk that stuck in his own eye?

“When the false charge is cleared, and if I have public expectations on my shoulders at the time, I will run for the DPJ presidential election,”

Again? Not that everyone didn't think this was coming, but still. Even if public expectation is 'not on his shoulders' he'll do it anyway. After all, public expectation has been on his shoulders to quit for a long time, but he won't. The guy's a criminal, and that's all. No surprise he feels self-righteous and that he deserves the PM seat.

After all, public expectation has been on his shoulders to quit for a long time,

Actually I think that should read something more like "I'm a legend in my own mind, and I am the savior of Japan"

So Ozawa reckons the guilty verdict for his 3 aides is undemocratic, whilst he awaits his turn to face the judicial system. Nice try Mr Ozawa, " I guess thou doth protest too much".

This old smelly fart Ozawa has no morals, and is living in his own la la world.

What is interesting about this article is that being convicted or not could not under any circumstance be attributed to the presence of democracy or lack there of. It merely is a gage of the state of a nations jurisprudence.

"To me Ozawa looks like a crook, sounds like one, and from all I read is one" and yeah other peeps told me he may be Top level yak and thangs: 893

I agree with you.Sometimes I wonder if this is even Japanese citizen, betraying japanese the people with lies and deceptions. This guy should languish in jail.

One has to wonder if this clown has any idea what a democracy is? What what his university major? Antidisestablishmentarianism?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Whatever we think about Ozawa and his aides, let's be careful. We all know about the 99% conviction rate in Japan. Did these guys really have a fair trial? And all we know about this case is through the press. Who controls the majority of the press in Japan?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ozawa knows he is about to lose his grip on the japanese political arena. If he gets convicted in the court of law it's all over for his political career.

Go to jail, go directly to jail for forcing the nation to allow the Chinese thug to come here to insult the Emperor.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Dear Mr. Ozawa, In a REAL democracy it would be your corrupt butt sitting in prison right now!

@issa1: "I agree with you.Sometimes I wonder if this is even Japanese citizen,"

Archaeologists unearthed remnants of rampant atrocious crimes only after the arrival of "Toraijin", but never before.

Saying there was no evidence is a pretty strong statement. I can't abide the man, but is it possible he is telling the truth about this?
