Police in Yamagata City have arrested a 30-year-old part-time employee of beef bowl chain Sukiya on suspicion of assaulting a co-worker inside the restaurant’s kitchen.
According to police, the assault occurred at around 9:20 a.m. on Sunday, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police arrested Tatsunari Yokoyama after he allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old male colleague — also a part-timer — by hitting him with a cooking utensil and kicking his lower abdomen.
Police said Yokoyama had just finished the night shift when the victim showed up for work. Yokoyama was quoted by police as saying he got angry because he had reprimanded the 20-year-old about his work attitude and felt the man was ignoring him.
Following the altercation, the victim called police.

The good old senpai/kohai nonsense rearing its ugly head.

Really now, 30 years old, PT worker at Sukiya complaining about "work attitude"?
Rather obvious to me who has the problem with "attitude" here!

No doubt Yokoyama got beat down by his parents, teachers, senpai in club activties. So at 30 years old no wonder violence seems like a solution.

Why not? Work ethics are work ethics, regardless of the job.

At 30 yrs old, he doesn't know being a part timer he is not regarded and is dispensible.

It's just another case of power harassment (AKA: Bullying) in the workplace. TIJ!

Every time i have eaten at Sukiya, i am amazed at how the workers there keep it together. They are always severely understaffed, and people who eat there seem to be the most impatient Japanese ever. Yelling at staff for getting an order wrong or taking more than 30 seconds to serve it.
Everyone is quick to judge the sempai for being a bully, but there is every chance that the 20yr old was being an insolent little punk. Perhaps he turned up for work late/hung over/unkempt and the overworked sempai lost his temper. Of course violence is wrong and therefore they were right to arrest him, but i dont know if it is purely because he is a big bully sempai picking on the poor innocent kohai.

Seriously? Maybe he has another job. Or, maybe he's juggling three PT jobs? Or, maybe he's taking care of sick or elderly parents? Or, finally went back to school to get a degree?
Sure, behavior speaks volumes about his attitude in general. But, there is nothing specifically about his PT status at that job that says anything at all about his work attitude.

Wrote about this before, but worth re-mentioning.
2 years ago my 3rd year university student in a Business course gave a presentation (in english) on Sukiya. The task for all students was to present a business small or large.
He chose Sukiya because he worked there part time.
His 20+min power point pres was an insiders look at the running of his shop.
To say it was eye opening is putting it mildly. Most of the student audience were pretty stunned - as was I.
He had great info, slides, delivery and he marked Sukiya as the blackest of companies, esp for it's treatment of staff. He said everyone was stressed out. Everyone.
He researched and presented well. He got a B.
But I was worried that I might be in trouble for allowing such a negative take on a private company to be part of official assessment.
So whenever I hear the name Sukiya now, I'm of course biased in my opinion. The case on hand, while never condoning violence, fits the mold I know about.

I would rather see a 30 year old part timer at a fast food chain than a 30 year old unemployed person at home just playing games all day.
A job is a job. We do not always know everyone's circumstances and regardless of what the job market is, it doesn't mean that everyone can find the same types of jobs equally.
Also, he is a part time worker there. That doesn't mean he doesn't work full time elsewhere.
Violence should not have been used. If you are upset with someone's attitude towards work and they are not listening, push it up the ladder.

If the pt worker has a bad attitude, I wouldn’t want to eat there.

Now who has a work attitude problem ???

To the 20year old, man up and defend yourself.
To the 30 year old, did you give him a Stone Cold Stunner too?
To Sukiya, you guys are worlds better than the hot mess they call Yoshinoya!

We live in a civilized society where going to the authorities is defending yourself.
