Besides a larger presence in the Malacca straight, I'm not sure what could have been done to stop this. Piracy is, unfortunately, going to be a problem on the high seas.

A permanent presence in this straight would be helpful, I think. Time to invest in some shiny new patrol vessels.

He said Wednesday that three Indonesian crew members were missing along with their passports and belongings.

100% inside job, these three guys organized the entire thing.

Shouldn't be too hard to track the ship, fuel and crew down.

A "bigger" presence, because there already is one. Hard to be everywhere at once though.

According to another source, the missing "crew" included the ship's captain, chief engineer and another crew member.

an estimated 3 million liters

Wow! Apparently 2 (not 1) other tankers appeared and transferred the fuel over several hours. These guys don't muck around.

I only agree because of how easy it seemed for 1 tanker to take everything off another tanker and disappear without a trace. As far as because they are Indonesian, most of these Japanese long distance ships have tons of foreigners working on them particularly Indonesians and Filipinos.

Perhaps they need to hire a private security firm that has hard-core ex-military members to help defend themselves and all of that oil.

After 9/11 the US Navy and local Navies had increased patrols in the area. Maybe they need to start that program back up.

Gogogo I share your suspicion. It was the first thing that crossed my mind when I read the line.
