Police arrest driver who fled fatal car crash in Ibaraki

Police in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, said Sunday they have arrested a 28-year-old man who fled the scene of a crash between his car and another car, killing the two occupants of the other vehicle.

According to police, the crash occurred at an intersection on a national highway at around 2 a.m. Saturday. Fuji TV reported that two men, aged 35 and 57, were killed after their "kei" (light) car and another car were involved in the crash.

Police said Masakazu Kikuchi, who was driving the other car, was not injured and fled the scene on foot after the crash. He turned himself in at a police station on Saturday night.

Kikuchi, a company employee, has been charged with reckless driving resulting in death. He was quoted by police as saying that after the accident, he became afraid, panicked when he saw the condition of the two men in the light car, and ran away.

Maybe waiting for his blood alcohol level to drop?

Rest in Peace to the poor victims.

What a gutless, heartless individual this Kikuchi is. Running away like a coward when he could have possibly helped his victims. Glad they got him - heres hoping this anti-social deadbeat faces a very long stretch in the slammer.

Drunk or not, he's very unlikely to admit it...

Shouldn't the headline be: "Hit and run driver turns himself in?". After all, a suspect who turns up at the police station and says "here I am", is making things pretty easy for Japan's finest.

He should have done at first as he had abandoned his car on the scene. RIP to the two victims.

He was drunk for sure and that's why he did a runner. He more than likely also caused this accident too.

Those K-cars are a great car as long as you don't have an accident in one. They fold up like aluminum cans in an accident. I'm always bemused when I see families with little kids getting around in them. Most countries won't import them because they are not safe, but they remain very popular in Japan. I don't care if my 2 liter Stepwgn only gets 12-14 k's per liter. At least I am not driving an aluminum can!

I am in no way defending this man, but let's not be quick to judge him. The human brain, as incredible as it may be, sometimes causes our body to freeze up and do something we normally won't do in certain traumatic situations such as these. In this case, the situation could not be processed quickly enough to think rationally thus resulting to an emotion we all know far too well, fear. So he ran. But he turned himself in proving that he is a good person who thinks rationally in calmer situations. Sometimes its easier to look at situations from a different perspective.

So often read the same story..I was afraid and panicked. Does society here not teach any morral respect. Had he been taught respect he might have stayed at the scene called emergency services and attempted to help the victims maybe even saving their lives in the process and instead of looking at death by reckless driving could have just been reckless driving.
