Police have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murder after he allegedly stabbed to death a woman in her 20s in a hotel in Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture.

Police said they received a call from the hotel front desk at around 5 p.m. Wednesday, saying that a guest had stabbed his female companion. Fuji TV reported that police rushed to the scene and found the suspect, Nobuhiro Niwa, of unknown employment, in the room with the woman who was unconscious from loss of blood due to multiple stab wounds. She was taken to hospital where she died at around 7 p.m.

The victim was identified Thursday as Maki Kido, a 22-year-old resident of Osaka, police said.

Police said Niwa, who lives in Toyama Prefecture, has admitted to the charge and said he stabbed Kido several times in an attempt to kill her after an argument. He said he met Kido via an online dating site.

why would u bring a knife with you??

Perhaps she told him that she takes it like she's being killed with a knife and he misunderstood?

He said he met Kido via an online dating site.<<< Oh; WELL, that makes it O.K. then, if you met on a Dating Site.

Most people on dating sites are nice people, but geeky and lonely. RIP

I met MANY people on one particular site, that is EXCELLENT while in Japan, for non-Japanese. Almost everyone was a great time. Lots of dates. No Psycos.

Maybe 20 years ago. Nowadays entirely normal people are using dating sites. It's the internet generation.

To kill your date.

Yep. One out of millions and millions of meetings started on line, that ended up in murder.

Kind of like how millions and millions of people meet in real life, and occasionally end up in murder.

Yet another waste of space kills someone after losing his temper. How can such a seemingly passive society produce so many sadistic monsters?

It is very sad that Maki's life had to end like that. Don't people talk things through anymore? It's like some of these people...men and women alike...have the mentality like "Oh, I'm in an argument and I am angry...might as well just kill whomever pissed me off".

Precisely because it's so seemingly passive. If you keep your emotions bottled up most of the time, when they do come out, they come out explosively.

Surprisingly low for a country of 130 million people.

Surprisingly low? Is it? How do you reach this conclusion? Compared to some places (with their ghettos on the outskirts of town, heavily armed gangs, drug violence etc.), yes it is. But Japan prides itself on being a super peaceful, first world country. If you think 3 stabbings a day even among this number of people is nothing, I can't say that I agree with you. My home country has about 20% of Japan's population, but a stabbing (A stabbing) gets front page news every time. When this kind of story comes up (as it so often does), the number of mentally ill wandering the streets in Japan is always the first thing that pops into my mind.

By the violent crime rate statistics - which show violent crime in Japan to be really low.

I'm not too sure where you get this 'Japan prides itself' comment from, can you provide with some links?

But moving past that, Japan is a peaceful first-world country.

If you think 3 stabbings a day even among this number of people is nothing, I can't say that I agree with you.

Of course it's not nothing. For the people affected by these stabbings, it's huge - life changing.

But in the greater scheme of things, it's a low number of incidents for a country of 130 million people.

My home country has about 20% of Japan's population, but a stabbing (A stabbing) gets front page news every time.

So how do the violent crime rates in your country compare to the rates in Japan? If they are similar or better, you must be from an extremely safe country, and lucky to live in Japan, another extremely safe country.

By the statistics. And you believe them? Here's a statistic for you. 99% of defendants in cases that go to trial here are found guilty. Why? Torture/forced confessions. Check Amnesty International, among other sources.

Rape statistics: fairly low, right? But are women likely to come forward and report it? Sometimes yes, but shame, disbelief/lack of support from authorities keeps the number down. I doubt that the police count their own attacks in the statistics either.

Unemployment statistics: Not too bad, right? Of course all those people hanging around building sites, shopping centers etc with orange batons in their hands are doing a crucial service to society, so they couldn't be included in the unemployment statistics, could they.
