Police on Friday night began a campaign nationwide to prevent accidents caused by drunk drivers ahead of the "bonenkai" (end-of-year party) season.
The National Police Agency said that between 8 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday, 3,407 drivers were stopped for speeding or reckless driving and given breathalyzer tests at 2,600 locations, Fuji TV reported. Twenty-nine people were arrested -- 20 on drunk driving charges and nine for driving without a license, the NPA said.
Police said 893 drivers were given tickets for speeding, while 326 were cautioned for not wearing seatbelts.
In Tokyo, police said 131 drivers were given breathalyzer tests, resulting in three arrests for drunk driving.
The NPA said the police conducted the campaign near amusement quarters and at the entrances to expressways.

Really need to fine people not wearing seatbelts it is a major problem in Japan.

So the reason they don't do this more than once a year is...? Seems there are a lot of dangerous people on the roads.

My boss drove my car one morning and was involve in a smash. Another car hit some ice and took him out. Anyway he had a big night the night before and would of been over the limit but was not tested. This was during this break.

So, we can expect to see the cops at the same old predictable places they've been using for the last few decades. This should not be a campaign! It should be every flipping day of the year! And, there should be 'morning after' testing as well!

I guess they are really serious this time -
" In Tokyo, police said 131 drivers were given breathalyzer tests, resulting in three arrests for drunk driving. "
So in the largest metropolis in the world - 15 mill 20 mill who knows - on a Friday night from 8 til 6 in the morn (sat) 3 arrests for drunk driving from 131 tests.
Blurted all the froth from me Asahi Black Beer all over the keyboard when I read that.
Must have broken into a heavy sweat with that workload. S'pose they're trying.

Wonder how many of their own will get caught during this "campaign "

These numbers don't seem to add up. Or do police here give that many warnings?

"326 were cautioned for not wearing seatbelts."
It appears that driving without a seatbelt is not important. I think for Japanese people, seatbelts are a novelty choice. In my car, you click it to kick it! No excuses. My car doesn't move until everyone in my car is secured with their seatbelts.

Best to avoid driving in December and January as much as possible.
