A lecturer in "what"? Would be interesting to know.

“We are investigating to determine whether this death is the result of an accident or a crime,”

Given the fact that he called his wife saying he felt he was "in danger" I think such a "convenient accident" isounds like it was "accidentally on purpose"...

His wife is now a widow.

Or he could of had a mental disability, eg schizophrenia. You have to rule out all causes, you can't just say it's obvious it was a crime. It's not like TV police dramas.

Schizophrenia...highly unlikely. He's a little old to be having a first break. More than likely, he's a tech academic working on visa...remember corporate espionage is all the rage now adays. Wouldn't be surprised if he happened to mess with the wrong corp.

Unlikely yes, but if you were an investigator in the beginning stages of an investigation, you would immediately 100% rule it out without first investigating if he had it or not in the past? Just base on you hunch without any scientific evidence to the man's history? Also I was using it as an example, there could be other mental issues that could be involved. Again, the point is, the police have to investigate all angles, accident or intentional death. You eliminate things as you investigate them based on the physical evidence found.

100%? You don't need to be a rocket scientist to make some reasonable assumptions. No one is 100% sure. Am I 100% sure this guy isn't the great descendant of the emperor of china? No? But can I make a reasonable assumption, based on the data presented from this news excerpt. Probably. If experts had to rule out every single possible, they would never solve a single case. Sometimes they have to infer assumption based off available data. In some cases, there is even less evidence than that. Like you said its not like TV police dramas, not every fact can be checked 100%.

He could have been mole a lot of spies teach in academia and he just so happen became exposed new too much and he had to be taken out of the game. That's why he called his wife to have her make a call he could have had two sets of handlers
