Police investigate online death threat against Agnes Chan

The Shibuya branch of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation into an online death threat against former recording artist Agnes Chan.

According to reports in the Sankei Shimbun and other media, the police responded to a request by Chan's business manager on Sept 20, one day after a post appeared on Twitter that threatened to leave "Lady Agnes soaked with blood unless she recognizes child pornography. So she'd better accept it right away."

The post also stated, "On September 21, I'll use a knife to slash Agnes to ribbons," and similarly intimidating remarks.

Chan, 60, has served as ambassador for UNICEF in Japan since 1998. In recent years, she has spearheaded public campaigns for elimination of child pornography.

A native of Hong Kong, Chan (Chinese name Chan Meiling) came to Japan in 1972 at the age of 17. A year later, her hit single "Chiisana Koi No Monogatari" reached number one on the pop music charts. She married her former manager and has juggled her show business career with earning academic degrees -- including a PhD from Stanford University in California -- and raising three sons. She has also published several novels.

"In recent years, she has spearheaded public campaigns for elimination of child pornography"

Well done to Agnes for standing up to these gangsters... :-)

She obviously does recognise child pornography - for what it is - and recent legislation banning possession comes on the back of her efforts at awareness raising. This guy had better be careful, or he'll unintentionally reinforce our image of the sort of people who fantasize about sexually abusing children.

a post appeared on Twitter that threatened to leave “Lady Agnes soaked with blood unless she recognizes child pornography. So she’d better accept it right away.”

The message in Japanese read: "児童ポルノ認めないと君のアグネス御殿は血まみれになりますよ。今すぐ認めてくださいね."

The passage above uses the words "recognize" and "accept" as translations for the verb "mitomeru" (認める). There are dozens of possible words/phrases for "mitomeru," but in this case "approve of" and/or "allow" would probably be more appropriate.

So he threatened to leave "Lady Agnes soaked in blood unless she allows child pornography (ie. makes child porn legal), so she had better give her approval for it right away." Anyway, my two cents.

We commend Agnes Chan for her courage to stand up and make her voice heard against child abuse and to end child pornography.

I have nothing but respect for Agnes Chan. What a tremendous lady.

More power to her and her endeavors.

What a tremendously courageous and industrious person. Ignore the threats of those loser cowards. And I must say, she looks damn fine for a 60 year old.

Just some unemployed troll with too much time on their hands.

The mind of a loser:

'How dare she try to have my favorite child porn banned! What should I do? I know! I'll threaten to kill her'.

When this person is caught, he (probably he) is going to be rather embarrassed.

@ PeaceOut "I personally think child porn has got to be a small worry..."

If you want to debate this with me you can but I must warn you that I will show as little mercy towards you as the child pornographers show to the little children.

I will go Old Testament on you and destroy whatever self-worth you thought you had and leave you a whimpering wreck of a human being.

So now, please tell me @PeaceOut, do you support child pornography?

There are some sick people in this world

The sicko who threatened Agnes maybe a netto-uyo type. She is Cantonese by birth.

Why aren't more people standing with and supporting this woman? I don't know what is happening to the children here in their homes etc but I do know that pornography is in their eyes whenever they pass or enter a convenience store for example. Something should be done to put it out of sight, especially from outside on the street. The easy acceptance of this in full view suggests that more serious things are going on out of view. Power to Agnes.

Sensato and Educator are bang on. This would hardly be the first time that JT bombed the translation.

Moderator: No, they are not bang on and there is nothing incorrect about the translation.

Agnes Chan was still a teenager, a nation-wide singing sensation, and a fellow student at the International Division of Sophia University in the early 1970s. One of my professors at the time felt sorry for her, saying that she was only earning a lot of money and would soon be a forgotten has been. Instead, Agnes has certainly come a long way, picking up degree after degree (BA, MA, EdD, PhD) and becoming an ambassador for UNICEF. During her Sophia years, instead of the other international students mobbing her, the other students so much refrained from what they thought would be bothering her that whenever I saw her around campus, such as sitting alone in the cafeteria, she looked lonely.

Agnes Chan has always been my idol since teens time and have never forgotten her though married and presently she inspired me with courage to live on and learn to love people. Her sweet face who sang mother of mine is unforgettable and full collection of her albums since the 70's been kept nicely todate.

Why ! Why! why a reputable and amazing lady be destroyed. No way ! Agnes, stand up and speak for your right.
