Police knew woman had problems with U.S. serviceman before their deaths

U.S. military sources earlier suggested he may have killed the woman and then committed suicide.

Could have been the other way around. But I doubt it.

Why were they still together if their relationship was on the rocks? It's impossible to help someone who won't help themselves. Now, they are both dead and have left an orphaned child. I just feel sorry for the kid.

Hopefully this paragraph, though buried almost all the way down to the bottom of the article, will ward off the Japan-bashing (and Japanese police-bashing in particular) that the misleading headline might otherwise generate.

Met her, but didnt contact her afterwards, just called, and I for one would love to have been a fly on the wall, as I can just imagine the conversation; "Hello. it's the police! You ok? Good? Ok....bye"

Which seems about the extent of their "concern" in far too many cases!

4th paragraph out of 6, VERY short paragraphs is "buried"? Looks to me like you just want to stir something up here with a comment like this!

Hopefully people will see it as such, and ignore it, and go ahead with the bashing as needed.

Personally speaking if the MP's contacted the Japanese police about the matter the US Military has more information than is being shared publicly!

THEY may be in line for some well deserved bashing too for not keeping this guy away from the woman.

Yeah, Bugle boy, it is so easy and common for a Japanese woman to kill a soldier, a trained hit man. Piece of cake, so we should wonder about this possibility. Right.

But she wouldn't need to be physically stronger than him or tactically trained. All she'd need is the desire, the will and a bit of imagination.

@Disillusioned, from another news source the little girl called her father who then called the police. Fortunately she still has her father, and isn't orphaned.

And as usual the police can do nothing until there are bodies.

Wrong. They could do plenty, but choose not to. Even stalking laws have changed but police wait until there's a corpse, then apologists like you say, "How could we have known?" It's only a slight step up from when schools get busted saying "there were no warnings!" about bullying, then it's revealed the warnings were clear.

Also, if there are signs of danger it is ultimately up to the individual to walk away.

I don't think we know enough details to really know who is at fault, but it sounds like the police and military equally share the blame here. Both knew of the situation and chose to not do enough to prevent this.

Again, for those who don't understand domestic violence and crime scenes in general:

A. It is usually the man who commits "couples" murder-suicide.

B. There are basic clues at a murder scene which inform the police as to who killed whom.

C. There was a witness. (Kind of important.)

Plus, now there is this info from the US MP.

So, if the initial conclusion is that HE murdered her and then committed suicide, that is most likely what happened.

I meant which organization could have prevented this from happening, the military or the police.

Just because organizations can, doesn't mean they should have. If the woman chose to stay with the man, how exactly should the military have prevented it? Or any organization for that matter?

According to Stars and Stripes, Olivero had a history of domestic violence allegations. The victim reported a sexual assault in January during a breakup, and reported it to the military police. However she didn't press charges with the J police since she thought it was being handled on base. Perhaps he should have been removed from Okinawa completely.

Update from the stars and stripes, they have identified the deceased woman and have passed along further information as well.

It truly does seem like the police on both sides have a lot to answer for here!
