Police in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, on Sunday arrested a 32-year-old police sergeant on suspicion of domestic violence after he grabbed his wife’s shoulders and hurled her to the floor.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 1 a.m. on Sunday. Sankei Shimbun reported that the woman, who is in her 30s, called 110 and said her husband had physically assaulted her.

Following his arrest, the suspect, whose name has not been released, was quoted by police as saying, “We were arguing over trivial matters.”

At the time of his arrest, the suspect had been drinking alcohol and had a blood alcohol content of 0.05 mm. He was released from custody after 8 a.m. on Sunday. His wife was not seriously hurt.

Shizuoka police Inspector Hiroshi Mihara issued a public apology by stating, “We are sincerely sorry that a police officer has been arrested on domestic violence charges and offer our deepest apologies to residents of [Shizuoka Prefecture]. We will continue to make sure that our employees have a clear understanding of their duties and will strictly enforce discipline.”

It should be 0.05 g/dL and not mm. And that’s super drunk.

Not condoning this guys actions but 0.05 is safe to drive in many countries, the guy was not drunk so the " I was drunk, I don't remember" isn't an option!

Power-hara, sex-hara or DV are not acknowledged by Japanese as problems.

this is part of Japanese culture. it will take times to change unfortunately.

I approve and support women who do not want be treated as slaves or worse.

Hmm...released after only a few hours. They are very lenient I guess. They should have squeezed him for 30 days and forced him to confess to attempted murder.

back in the day I watched a kobanite do the funky chicken in Shizuoka near his station , and on another occasion I called their office and received a belligerent response cause my Japanese language was not so good, and was told I would be censured.

...arrested a 32-year-old police sergeant... at around 1 a.m. on Sunday... He was released from custody after 8 a.m.

That seems a bit quick. Did he have a copy of the cell keys in his pocket and let himself out?!

another “tough” guy ...

He was drunk, he didn't remember. That was reason why he was released so quick.

I knew of an American fella who, in the heat of an arguement, struck his then girlfriend. He wasn't on drugs, had no prior records with the cozzers here nor was he drunk. He was arrested and put in jail for 2 years and after his 2 year jail sentence, he was deported back to America and banned from Japan. Why was this "officer" released shortly after? Isn't this a crime? Or did they just prove that the "Japanese justice system" is corrupt and works for some?

Either that. Or one of an infinite number of other things.
