A police sergeant has been arrested for punching and kicking a 44-year-old office worker on a train in Kanagawa Prefecture, police said Thursday.

According to police, the sergeant, who has been identified as 37-year-old Jun Yoshinaga, was traveling on the Denentoshi Line between Futakotamagawa Station and Mizonokuchi Station at around 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday after consuming alcohol. Police say the victim claims he was sitting on the train when Yoshinaga, who had been standing nearby, suddenly began kicking his legs and punching his face. Yoshinaga was subdued by station guards at Mizonokuchi Station and later arrested.

Police say that Yoshinaga was inebriated at the time of the incident and that the victim did not sustain any injuries during the attack.

What is a week in Japan without a crazy cop story?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

"....kicking his legs and punching his face"

And no injuries??? They're either lying about "no injuries", or this cop couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag.

The last sentence seems like it's giving two reasons that we shouldn't worry about this at all. First of all, he was drunk which apparently is an acceptable excuse for the majority of people in Japan (foreigners and especially anyone with SOFA status excluded). And secondly, the victim wasn't covered in bruises and I'm gonna guess will be "persuaded" not to press any charges, so let's forget about it all and continue like nothing has happened.

Police sergeant arrested for drunken assault on train

Why would anyone assault a train?

In this heat, the stupid-shit-o-meter is off the charts.

A few stiff drinks is just the match that powder keg needed.

It's good to know that we are protected from middle aged office workers, that are minding their own business. They scare me to death!! No telling what would have happened had that drunken police sergeant not been there.....

Sounds like this Yoshinaga dude has way too much stress! He should not be allowed to use any guns etc...he must be a WALKING TIME BOMB! But this in not only in Japan, just look at the fools in the LAPD etc..back in the USA.

buffoon. the boys in blue show us how it`s done. i just wish they could get their act together.

@SimondB

The police scandals in other countries are just as bad, if not worse. In fact, the worst police scandals in my country are far, far worse than any story I've heard about Japanese police ever. And my country is regarded as safe... I can wonder about some of the stuff I hear about other police overseas.

And no, I have no reason to defend Japanese police. This clown will be have the rest of his life to regret his actions, just because he could not control himself. Shameful. I hope he changes his life for the better.

"I have no recollection of that, I was drunk, it's extremely regrettable" case closed.

As soon as I saw the headline, I just knew it would be a Kanagawa Keystone. They have quite the reputation.

Can I get a Looooooooooooooooooooooooool!

He is a criminal, his actions in a court would bring him up to 3 years imprisonment (assault with intention to harm, anti-social behaviour, shame to society), but he will simply get a slapped wrist.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

so what will happen to him. from the tone of this article it feels like nothing will happen.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What made this guy start throwing punches etc? surely he didnt just pick someone randomly and just went for it? Maybe the officeworker said or did something before? (NOT that I condone its worth hitting someone ) Either way something is missing to this story.

@miamum: omygosh scary

I wonder if they put him with the rest of the "population" at the police station overnight and the next day on the bus to see the prosecutor and the judge the next day...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"the victim did not sustain any injuries during the attack." means, of course, the violent action (can it be otherwise?) of "kicking his legs and punching his face" is just sort of a pantomime, with no actual physical contacts with the victim. In that case, what law can they charge him with?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I really hope this violent offender gets prison time. I hear ex-cops receive some very "special" treatment in prisons...

Some reporters here, quite offten, appeare to be quite "inebriated" themselves.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Surely he is not a policeman in his own free time. Why do Japanese reporters always quote a persons occupation or employers name. He as an individual acted like an idiot, not the police force.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Because they (police officers, school teachers, politicians) are supposed to be respectable law abiding pillars of society. Most of them are government employed as well which means we the public pay for their salary and should be able to expect a fair amount of integrity and professionalism in return.

People in this country better learn two things: (1) handle your liquor better and (2) being drunk will not save your sorry butt when a stressed-out person retaliates. I doubt that I am alone when I say I would have smashed this drunk guy through a window if he had started kicking me. Everyone is under tremendous stress these days that the grown-up babies need to realized that.

This makes me so angry I can't even type! Should read: "Everyone is under tremendous stress these days and it's time that the grown-up babies to realize that."

Kanagawa cops are a joke, was at the local police station (not police box) but large station yesterday handing in some money i found in the street, sitting behind the counter at their desks would have been about 15 cops doing various things, i counted 3 actually asleep at their desks in full view of the public and their seniors.

I couldnt believe what i was seeing, one guy had nodded off in the middle of writing a report and still had his pen in his hand, his superior was sitting right opposite him and seemed puzzled that i found the sleeping cops behaviour strange.

The superior was looking at me with a look on his face that seemed to be saying look at this strange gaijin staring at my staff member nodding off at his desk, gee these gaijin are a strange bunch aint they kinda look.

the cop is a pathetic joke. after punching the victim there were no visible injuries, WTF.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"the victim did not sustain any injuries"

That's good.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

All right , the drunk will have to dig into his pocket and hand over the price of a nice vacation , somewhere cool I would ask for , himmmmmm now where would I go with my injuries to rest up ? . on another note, I haven't heard of smacking an effigy with a baseball bat in a long time , maybe that's what the Kopper needs to out his stress.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If there were no injuries will there be compensation? Seems like a very strange "violent attack." Glad there weren't any weapons involved.

Remember it's not the alcohol. Please continue buying.

Oh my God! We used to live on that line. That could just as easily have been my husband and my childrens father, sitting there minding his own business after a hard day only to have blows rained down on him. I wouldn`t be dropping the charges. Guy needs a lesson.

@ReformedBasher- you say that "This clown will be have the rest of his life to regret his actions, just because he could not control himself". So you are assuming he's going to be dismissed from the police force because of his actions? I'm gonna guess he'll receive a suspension for a month, a slap on the wrists, and will be reporting back for duty in September, once everything has been swept under the carpet.

Napoleon Complex?

My father was a police officer in London until the late 80's. He told me many a tale like this of officers under pressure who turn to the bottle, abusing themselves , strangers and even their wife and kids. Usually the police "persuaded" the victim not to press charges. Things have changed in Britain and i guess in most places with more human rights CCTV and video interrogations. I wouldn't put it past most Japanese police to still have the old mindset of sticking together and protecting each other at all costs.

Tamesu-san: Nikotama/Futakotama is in Tokyo. Mizonokuchi is in Kanagawa.

Some officers are very good people, however, vast majority of police officers are bullies who continues with their intimidating, assaultive behavior and use their badge are a free pass to do so. Other police offices are wimpy people that got picked on by life and now they want to pay the world back and use their authority do push others around.
