According to what I read in a J magazine yesterday, the head of the kissa where they got Takahashi recognized him, called the cops over, they hemmed and hawed saying "Do you think that's him?", "It doesn't look like him" and weren't going to do anything. Takahashi felt the police presence and got up to use the toilet, and then tried to slip out. The cops still weren't going to do anything and the guy (kissa worker) kept saying "it's him it's him" and finally the cops asked him his name outside. Takahashi probably could've just said "No I'm not Takahashi" and gone on his way...

THIS! I saw this on TV, the cops didnt even recognize him and told the staff he was mistaken. Then the guy from the shop told them he was pretty sure. And after the cops ASKED the guys name (wtf) and he admitted he was Takashi something. Seriously, lousy policework.

I think the staff member should get the reward PLUS those officers' salaries for two months. Since he did the work.

And what would have happened if he laughed and said, "Yeah, people say that all the time. No, I'm not Takahashi but I understand the confusion." The police probably would've apologized with a couple of moshiwake arimasens.

This is beginning to sound all so familiar. The woman who was caught prior to this man's arrest was spotted ages ago by a member of the public but this wasn't followed up by the police (that person should also claim part of the reward). And the other Aum member who tried to turn himself in at a koban - well, we all know what happened there. Basically, the police are useless, lazy and incompetent. I wonder how many other times they've let criminals slip through the net. Putting criminals' faces on posters does not actually mean you're doing anything, although it may look like it. They really on the public to do all the work, or rely on criminals to surrender and confess.

Yes, in addition, when Takahashi went to the restroom, the clerk kept insisting it was him (he had checked the internet on the computer at the fron desk and found his photo) the inspectors (not just officers mind you but inspectors) shrugged and said, "We might as well ask him some questions."

The clerk is a hero. He should get the money, no question. His actions led directly to Takahashi's arrest. While the call was indeed helpful, if it was not for the insistence of the clerk, Takahashi would not have been captured that day.

Massive conspiracy this. I think these people who spotted him were secret Aum members, and are going to give the money back to restore the Aum. It's plausible - seeing as he was going to be caught anyway, maybe this situation was contrived from the beginning.

Japanese finest, the staff member had to "urge" the officers to do their job... these "officers" need to be fired. The special division was created so that cops didn't have to do work.

if you think about it, since the policemen didn't believe the staff guy, when they asked Takahashi it's really amazing he plainly confessed. if he would have said no way, I'm not that guy, probably the police would have apologized and let him go

Share the money trough whole the link! First we ever saw his new face was from the bank security cameras - who came up it might be him? Later he was spoted here and there in shops, etc. - every-time someone tipped the police, no? And of course the lions share should be to the lad who insisted for police to check on him.

On the side note - are Japanese police afraid to make a random check for identity? They can do bicycle checks but not personality check when searching for eventual criminals? Is this from politeness in case they are mistaken or they just don't have time to wait for someone without driving license to issue his juminhyou ? Its about time for Japanese to have ID cards from 16 or 18yo and be required to have it with them.

10 million yen seems like peanuts.. when the bounty for capturing other terror networks is much higher.. shouldn't they reward people 100-300 million yen close to 1-3 million US

It's kind of a shame that it takes financial rewards to urge people to do the civil thing and report terrorists who have killed many and destroyed thousands of lives. It's almost suggesting that some people here couldn't be bothered if a big carrot was dangled in front of them. That's reality, I guess, and as Anglootaku states these rewards are much bigger elsewhere. Let's just be happy these terrorists are locked up - they money is completely unimportant to the issue.

I wonder how much taxpayer money they will spend deciding on who gets what in reward money.

lol Like you said, he could ave just said, "yeah, ppl keep saying I look like him" and laughed, maybe added "You keep looking for him, we're all counting on you to keep us safe!" Really in admitting his id to those idiots, he probably deserves the reward for finding himself. They should let him yuse it for his legal defense, or a last meal.
