Policeman run over, robbed while on blind date in Fukuoka

A policeman's blind date went horribly awry when he was run over by a car and robbed, police said Wednesday. The Fukuoka Prefectrural police officer met the woman via a cell phone dating site last month.

The woman asked the officer to meet her in a supermarket parking lot, where he was confronted by six men, a police spokesman said. The gang rammed the policeman with their car, causing injuries to his legs, and forced him to hand over cash and his bank ATM card, getting away with 254,000 yen. Gang leader Masanori Ishikawa, 39, has been arrested in connection with the robbery, police said.

did he just get his paycheck or commonly has so much money with him?

He was probably thinking of using that money for some "extra curricular" activities with his blind date. BUSTED!

So much money? It was only about $250 U.S. In this country 24 hour ATMs are still kind of rare, and everything is expensive, so it is pretty standard to carry such amounts. It is easy to burn through that kind of cash on a date.

It is safer to conduct a date in the patrol car. --Cirroc

caveman, thats more like 2500$. what kind of 'blind date' was this? how many times does this kind of robbery go unreported for fear of causing embarrassment? internet dating obviously has its perils.

Too bad for the youngster getting hurt... But as long as Japan is willing to "peacefully" co-exist with organized crime and treat them as they are just another legitimate corporation, they are going to continue to have problems....

Here's a news flash for you Japan....

It's called the RICO statue.... You know if you had a law like this you could put these thugsters out of business or drive them so far underground, you wouldn't have problems like this....

I think you mean statute ;)

Yes, you are right. Thank you thundercat.

That changes things, but if the terebi tarento are to be believed some people do carry that kind of cash for no apparent reason. It is hard to say if that is true or not, but the Japanese do a lot of things we would not expect. --Cirroc

You seem to forget that Japan is a cash based society, that they rarely use any kind of debit or even credit cards. Its not unusual for people to walk around with anywhere between 500 bucks to 3000. In Australia Id walk around with 60 max, but here in Japan i feel safe with a couple of grand on me.

Would you guys agree to meet a girl for the first time in an area where noone is around?

From the Asahi Shimbun: [......] On Sept. 9, the suspects ran over the man's right leg with a car and stole his wallet containing about 34,000 yen and cellphone in Onojo, Fukuoka Prefecture, police said. The six are also suspected of later extorting 20,000 yen in cash from the officer and withdrawing 200,000 yen in cash from an ATM using his credit card http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200810220062.html

What a great scam this is for young ladies with a band of toughs to perpetrate. I mean, really. Think about it. Most people would be way too embarrassed to notify the cops if they were out looking to connect with some underage tail. I mean, sure, they say woman, but... I've read a few occasions of this sort of scam running amok, so it must happen much, much, MUCH more frequently than many might suspect. This time they may have tried to con the wrong guy.

Policemen might not be so eager to serve the public, but they sure look out after their own.

Poor dude, his pal in Kagoshima got lucky, but seems like these dating sites are a bit hit and miss.

Why on earth does the headline say "Blind Date"?

This fool got rolled.

police should have known better about dating sites...

Blind date? Carrying 25 man on him? Gangster boss? There has to be more to the story than the article says.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Got to agree: taking 254,000 yen with you on a blind date would casuse rational people to maybe raise their eyebrows a little.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I can imagine nothing more qill get reported of this, as is usually the case after the initial story breaks. Doing so would surely disrupt the wa.

What a poor place to pick for a blind date. I've gone on some "blind dates" before (a.k.a. eyeballs) and we always do it on a public place with lots of people. Meeting up in a fringe area like in a parking lot is asking for trouble.

Whatever amopunt of money he had on him, this Police Officer didn't deserve this! What a horrible nightmarish scenario!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Couldn't cop find better way to find his sweet heart? It was a good set up. And will other cops learn anything from this scenario? Sure he didn't deserve this, but the question is: 'Was woman aware that he was a cop?'

well he is a Japanese policeman so we should forgive him for his bumbling approach.;)

My patients grows short with generalized comments like this.

As tigris pointed out in the Asahi newspaper report, 200,000 yen was withdrawn from an ATM using the policeman's credit card. Probably after they ran him over to get his card number.

Bad luck for the girl and her friends on her choice of dates. The gang probably has rolled their last John.

I agree with Otaru, and with Blue Tiger. For those who think this is funny because the victim was a cop, think twice when you are in dire need of assistance. And thank that Cop who comes to your aid.

Caveman lawyer do you really live in Japan? there are many Lawson and Sunkus that have ATM's and they are 24H shops

This story sounds phony. Why the hell are you bringing more than 250 000 yen for a blind date and meeting a chick in a supermarket parking lot?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

GenevaMan - because hookers don't take plastic (at least not ones that 'date' in supermarket parking lots...)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Once again if you read the real paper and not just an internet rag you would see he only had about 350dollars on him, they took the rest from his ATM card later.... I carry that much everyday just like most in Tokyo..

He got rolled, it happens in every country. Life goes on... Maybe now the Cops will go after the whole wanna be bangers...

Hope he recovers and they get the girl/wanna be bangers...

It's well-known that a supermarket car park is the perfect spot for a 'blind date'. Let's hope his leg injuries aren't too serious and the rest of the gang get arrested too.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Geez, I wonder whatever happened to the girl?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

she took her share of the money and split like a banana

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm curious how old the girl was that he arranged to meet. Was she another underage girl like that other cop who got busted for having sex with a 17 year old?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If anyone asks to meet you in a car park, you can be pretty certain that they are up to no good! I hope he gets better soon and the gang leader does some cold hard time to think about what a loser he is, inside a prison cell!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Maybe he was working under cover?

I wonder if they knew he was a cop? Maybe this was both a robbery and revenge? There's a lot missing from the story.

Either way I hope he heals up OK, those kind of injuries can last a long time.

Didn't say much about the woman. Maybe she was just a voice on the phone or a crossdresser or hermaphrodite or sump'm. No details. I don't think I'd want a blind date even if I were drunk. Although, I have gone out with a couple Medusas I met on bar stools. But they passed inspection from the neck down.

dennis0bauer - Yes, there are many convenience stores open 24 hours but the ATMs are not available to withdraw funds from the vast majority of banks after a certain time (around 10pm I believe until maybe 6am or 9am at night, with weekend times varying a little).

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I wonder how he got in a situation to get his leg run over. Aren't there going to be witnesses from this parking lot? How did they catch the gang leader? What the heck is the rest of the story JT?

i don't understand. did they hit him with a car and then drag him to an ATM? also, how was someone able to hit a man with a car, then pile him into the passenger area and drive him to an ATM and no security cameras caught any of the festivities? how'bout a nosey Parker nearby with a mobile phone camera? if i even put the garbage out unsorted, 5 - 6 japanese mysteriously/rapidly appear from the sky, bushes and trees to harass me. can i not watch the hilarity on YOUTUBE?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I feel sorry for this unlucky cop, but at the same time it makes me laugh. I hope he is not married (but probably is) he is sure to catch hell from his okusan too!
