Post office section chief steals Y600,000 worth of New Year postcards

A section manager of a post office in Kanagawa has been arrested after it came to light that he had stolen thousands of "nengajo" (New Year postcards).

According to police, the suspect, identified as Toshio Abe, 58, stole 12,000 postcards worth around 600,000 yen in total, TBS reported. Police say Abe gained access to where the cards are kept by using illegal duplicates of the master keys, to which he had access at work.

Police say their suspicions were aroused when Abe was seen carrying a large number of postcards into a discount ticket store, of the type which usually sells New Year postcards.

Anyway, Abe-san, at 58, was possibly worried that his approaching mandatory retirement was not going to provide him enough of a pension?

Insufficient pension or insufficient pocket-money for pub or pachinko play....

And whoever did the "was seeing" reported it to the local koban? Who are these mystery people?

Anyway, Abe-san, at 58, was possibly worried that his approaching mandatory retirement was not going to provide him enough of a pension? Abandoning the age ceiling might be a good answer to end this sort of behavior. Just a thought.

The ticket store owner(s) will be arrested next for knowingly receiving stolen property. It doesn't say in this article that the store called police, just that "Abe was seen carrying a large number of the postcards into a discount ticket store."

This is weird! I'm sure the store owner knew about the origins of the cards.

Wonder if the discount stores know or care where their "supplies" come from
