Authorities said Sunday that a male prisoner in his 40s who was in solitary confinement had committed suicide at Hiroshima detention center.
According to facility officials, the man was discovered at around 1:40 a.m. by a staff member on patrol. He was hanging from a noose constructed out of sheets and suspended from the metal grill covering the window. The prisoner was alive, but died soon after at the hospital. The same staff member had noticed nothing unusual on a patrol about 10 minutes earlier.
The man had entered the facility in November of last year, and was awaiting transferral to a penitentiary.
The incident comes in the wake of another hanging suicide on Jan 9 by a male defendant who was awaiting sentencing.© News reports
