Prisoner commits suicide at Hiroshima detention center

Authorities said Sunday that a male prisoner in his 40s who was in solitary confinement had committed suicide at Hiroshima detention center.

According to facility officials, the man was discovered at around 1:40 a.m. by a staff member on patrol. He was hanging from a noose constructed out of sheets and suspended from the metal grill covering the window. The prisoner was alive, but died soon after at the hospital. The same staff member had noticed nothing unusual on a patrol about 10 minutes earlier.

The man had entered the facility in November of last year, and was awaiting transferral to a penitentiary.

The incident comes in the wake of another hanging suicide on Jan 9 by a male defendant who was awaiting sentencing.

I can kind of understand his action.

You can bet there won't be an autopsy to examine the body for bruises or signs of a struggle.

You can bet there will be posters on here that will read things into articles without proof but will post them as certainties.

Bushlover, are you aware of statistics in Japan that show only about 10% of unexplained deaths in Japan receive forensic autopsies? Or that it's practically impossible to get one unless the family pulls strings? Even when Tokitaizan (the late Takashi Saito) was beaten to death by senior wrestlers at Tokitsukaze stable the Aichi police would not order one, and it had to be performed at the behest of his family at Niigata U. medical school.

Ignore him, Beelzebub...We all know how behind draconian-archaic this country is, even towards crime victims.

he was rescued but died at the hospital. why would you hang him, and then rescue him? what sense does that make? none.

Solitary confinement is probably one of the worst possible punishments ever. How long was he in that condition, I wonder?

What was his crime?

I too rather be dead than being in J-prison.

I hope that Oshio does the same thing.

Sounds like he had just been convicted. I wonder what crime he was convicted of and if he really did it. Sad when anyone takes their own life, even a prisoner.

Had he been in solitary since November - so 2 to 3 months? That's hard on a man.

Solitary confinement should be abolished worldwide - it is very cruel and can be considered as 'psycho-torture'........

Beelzebub, Nothing wrong about you pointing out that autopsies aren't done enough, but to jump to the conclusion that this guy was murdered just makes you weaker than the prison system you're criticizing.

Solitary abolished? In Japanese prison only the gaijin and the so called "Hanjos" are getting solitary. It is a privilige! Beelzebub: What is an autopsy? What is an autopsy in Japan? What is an autopsy in a Japanese prison? Mate I am with you, but it is not so hard in a Japanese prison. I have done three years in Osaka and it was OK. It is not OK for sick/old/mental people, because they suffer. Same as in the jap society. No big difference between inside and outside. Inside the weakest commit suicide and inside the weakest suffers the most. Inside is a lot of cruelty commited by persons with power and inside there is no progress. What about outside? Enjoy life mates and do things different.
