I think this looks like an attempt to minimize the fact that it was around half of the ruling party and it should read: links between around half of the lawmakers belonging to Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the Unification Church

Don't think he can be. Have murder more than one person. If he had taken out at least one more LDP member, then that would have been different (not advocating that, of course).

I think it's good that Mr. Yamagami was found to be competent to stand trial. However, I worry about the LDP's influence on the trial. We have anti-Trust laws for companies, but what about political parties?
sakurasuki
Is it better to spend all investigation resources on him not on the church?
wallace
People have been executed for a single murder. Difficult at this time to predict the outcome of this case.

The definitely outcome of this trial will be that yamagami will be on Japanese death row(capital punishment) waiting to get hanged but during his time in prison he may get a high ranking status among his inmate peers the fact he took out a Priminister with a GUN. I wonder how he will be treated in prison once he is there.

@Alan Harrison
Zeems like you already condammed Yamagami.
As said by Tom san, he desrves a fair trail.
There is much to say about the role of Abe san and the LDP party in this case.
Althoug violence ia never to be defended, many understand what triggered Yamagami...
Strangerland
Of course they did. But had he been found not competent to stand trial, their intentions would be irrelevant, as they would not be taken into consideration when the next decision as to how to treat him would be made. That's how it works here in this Japan.
Tom San
I believe Yanagumi deserves a fair trail.

It is really unfortunate that his legitimate grievances were brushed aside for years. His terrible action has resulted in real political change in Japan.
wallace
All political parties have volunteers but they must receive no money.
Alan Harrison
Yamagami is headed for the gallows - and rightly so. He meticulously and cold-bloodedly carried out this assassination.
Yamagami is headed to a District Court - and rightly so. The court will decide whether or not he meticulously and cold-bloodedly carried out the act of fatally shooting former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Gallows ASAP!!..
He has not been on trail yet.

Yamagami will now discover that some folks are more equal than others and he'll pay a higher price for taking a life.

I would have thought that it would be his defence team who would apply to a judge and access him and present the findings before a judge, as to whether or not he is fit to stand trail.
Tom San
When is his trail?
Luis David Yanez
Like any other person.
It's pretty obvious what he did. He also admitted to it early, so I think the trial will be pretty straight forward tbh.
What gives me the creeps is how some people are almost wishing this guy gets away with murder.
Cricky
With the ruling party having sway over the Justice system (if you can call it a justice system) anything could happen. Unknowingly perhaps he has embarrassed shown the corruption that is the foundation of Japans political system.

The story was more on the lines of: His mother had financial problems due to the Unification Church, that, being anti-communist, naturally has ties with Nobusuke Kishi, and as Abe was the grandson of Kishi, the assassin decided to assassinate Abe, and miraculously succeeded in the assassination of the then chairman of LDP, the most powerful man in Japan, using a homemade gun. Wow, what a story, and wow, everyone believes it!!!

Gallows ASAP!!..
oyatoi
If he is sent to the gallows, it will be purely out of revenge. Elites signaling to the plebs that some lives matter more than others and that the minimum two victim or more rule to qualify for the death penalty can be dispensed with whenever they choose. Yamagami, for his part, probably views such a fate with equanimity; potential martyrdom for avenging one of the facilitators of his family’s dispossession.
Numan
What no suspended sentence like other Japanese murders?
A Japanese dude ate a woman and never spent one day in Japanese prison! He lived a long a happy life with celebrity fame!
Or, is this LDP payback for exposing Shinzo Abe and his friends corruption to the old folks who usually vote for them and the rest of the world?
Alan Harrison
Prosecutors always intended to indict him from day one. This is Japan.
Luis David Yanez
If anything, I think Yamagami has shown how terrorism does work.
I mean, he committed a violent act, killing a person to destroy an organization, and he kind of did.
More people seem to care now so much about the Unification Church, even when before the Abe assassination there were already people talking about it, but no one cared at the time.
This guy will probably be glorified by some, which is just a reflection of how broken today's world is.
tigerjane
It will be interesting to see if he would be hanged because it will bring more focus on the government and all the old cronies that run it and they absolutely they don't want that.
Sadly, the corruption in the country is much higher than other countries because of the "shoganai" "it cannot be helped" attitude. That is until someone like this guy who snaps and does something drastic to get the attention and his form of justice at the cost of a life.
Meiyouwenti
If Yamagami held such a grudge against the Unification Church then why didn’t he target the church officials who actually stole money from his mother? I think he played the role similar to that of Oswald in the assassination of JFK.
Fighto!
