If he had been a more popular YouTuber, he could have qualified for the Japanese "suspended sentence for celebrities" program.

Because of course the opinions of nebulous strangers is more important than the safety and well-being of your wife

Well I'm not gonna say what he did was Right nor I'm I gonna say what he did was Wrong but what I will say is if the wife was unhappy with her husband then separate or divorce him. Don't disrespect him that's not the way to treat people or family members. Seems the guy was posting videos as a way of making income to support his family and she was mocking him on social media....Not a good women ah what did she expect would happen when he found out she was the villain making derogatory comments on videos he had uploaded. She should consider herself lucky some other guy might of slid her throat and set her on fire.

Your comment sounds kinda like victim blaming. Violence against people, especially women is wrong. A good YouTuber should be able to handle a few negative comments. The guy has some serious temper management problem.

Yoshisan,

It's not "victim blaming. He just stated the truth.

Maybe he was doing this for a little extra pocket money and she just did it for spite, yeah he shouldnt have done what he did but you should understand how he felt.

If being called a baldy or stupid is gonna tick him off, it's a good thing hes not a youtuber..

Pretty sure it was finding out that it was his wife that ticked him off.

I f she was making those comments probably she resented him for some reason. Then why didn't she just ask for divorce, instead of being mean to him on social networks, why not get a divorce?

The problem is, most of the times Japanese couples get married just because it's convenient (from a society point of view) and end up hating their partner. I personally know a lot of people in such cases.

Probably the root of the problem is this. They should not marry someone because society put pressure on them to get married or whatever, or because they just want a husband or a wife that could fill the societal role that they expect. These are decisions that need appropriate consideration.

So it is OK to resolve to violence if you are upset. The whole point is he ASSAULTED her. People just do not get it. The wife may be wrong but as a husband he should have never hit your wife. There are other ways to deal with it like divorcing her etc.

I know this isn't a popular idea in today's current delicate environment, but sometimes victims do share the blame. This case is a good example of that.

People just do not get it.

People get it just fine. I think you are having trouble getting what others are saying here. They aren't saying it's OK to use violence to express how upset you are. But they understand why someone might use violence. That's not at all the same thing as condoning it. Yes, he was wrong. But his clearly vindictive and underhanded wife is far from blameless.

Do you understand? Because understanding is not the same as condoning. It means you have empathy.

Now I understand why my government here spend millions of dollars preventing domestic violence and still everyday it happens. I wonder if this happens to your daughter if you will be saying the same thing.

Empathy for a man who beat up his wife?

In handing down the sentence, which was not suspended, Judge Sadahiro Ariga said the defendant's act "should be strongly criticized as he committed the crime after losing his temper."

OK, usually I try to frame a judgment or sentence in terms of legal theory and am more understanding of them than most of JapanToday's commenters, but I don't get this one. This implies that the judge viewed "losing his temper" as an aggravating factor, but why should it? Logically, "losing one's temper" before getting on with his crime moves him part of the way to affect or partial insanity, which by usual legal theory should decrease his culpability and is a mitigating factor. Especially since this loss of temper was caused by what a reasonable person would have called a valid provocation.

Of course I would. But my daughter wouldn't be the type do the crazy stuff this woman did, so that scenario is unlikely. What would you do? Seek revenge? Empathy is an essential part of justice, except perhaps in the most depraved crimes.

Now I understand why my government here spend millions of dollars preventing domestic violence and still everyday it happens.

Governments are good at wasting taxpayers' hard-earned money. Since the number one source of domestic problems is usually money, perhaps your government should let people keep their money. That might reduce domestic violence more than their ineffective and expensive approach.

Katori seriously injured his wife in March by punching and kicking her in the face while she was confined in their apartment in the city of Oita with her wrists and ankles bound with adhesive tape.

Any chance of the court, in addition to the two years in prison, sentence him to his wrists and ankles being bound and letting his wife give him a good beating? That might make an, ahem, impression on him.

Yoshisan88 people who say "victim blaming" are useless trash. Go away.

For anyone interested in further details, I was able to glean information off a Japanese news source. Apparently, the man was trying to make a career off youtube. His wife left those comments in order to dissuade him, so that he could find a 'proper' job. At the time of this post, he currently has 1.2k subscribers, with most of his videos garnering only a few hundreds of views. His latest videos, following the controversy have garnered a couple thousand. This is the name of the channel provided in the news source カトリリョウマ, and it seems he was trying to build a following on social media as well @ YXIFLiyXeu2EV62 . The wife apparently lost patience waiting for his youtube career to take off during the course of well over a year. The husband was clearly frustrated with his wife for not supporting him and indefensibly assaulted her. I was reading some of the comments and saw some people confused with some minor details so here is a little extra context. Hopefully it helps.

Amazing that anybody is defending the piece of crap husband for PUNCHING AND KICKING HER IN THE FACE simply for leaving negative comments on his YouTube videos, as if calling someone "bald" or "stupid" is worthy of such a violent reaction.

They aren't both to blame. HE is to blame. Period. And, he should've gotten a longer sentence for such a violent act. WTF is wrong people? Seriously.
