Retired police officers post ¥2 mil reward in Osaka fugitive case

It has been one month since rape and robbery suspect Junya Hida, 30, escaped from a police station in Tondabayashi, Osaka Prefecture, after he was left alone in a room following a meeting with his lawyer.

A 2 million yen reward is being offered to anyone who provides information leading to Hida’s capture. The reward money is the sum of voluntary contributions from retired police officers in Osaka. According to police, this is a very rare case of a cash reward being provided by retired police officers.

Police have also set up large posters showing a full-size picture of Hida at 20 places around Osaka.

Anyone with any information on Hida’s whereabouts is asked to call the toll-free number 0120-224-110.

I don't think that this would very likely happen in any other country than Japan.

Really? Why don't you think so? Of all the countries in the world, only Japanese coppers try to make up for the massive cock-ups of their crew with money?

I hope they catch him soon too. They should never have let him escape.

OSAKA - It has been one month since rape and robbery suspect Junya Hida, 30, escaped from a police station in Tondabayashi, Osaka Prefecture,

Shouldn't that read, "walked out of a police station"? It's hardly an 'escape' if he just strolled out of an unlocked door, through the police station and off to freedom.

The ex-cops have decided to put up the bounty money because they are so ashamed of the police incompetence and their inability to catch the rape suspect. The fugitive has been on the run for a month now. He must have the survival skills of a trained special-force man.

These retired police officers are doing a good thing here - hope it helps catch that funny looking guy quickly

Let's also not forget that Japanese people don't always announce their donations to the world like their western counterparts.

Police have also set up large posters showing a full-size picture of Hida at 20 places around Osaka.

That's nice, but again, he was last seen in Amagasaki (when police had limited their search to Osaka). He then left a note in his friend's bike in Amagasaki, as well.

I guess he escaped because he didn’t expect he would be given the opportunity to adequately defend his innocence in court.

OK, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that he's guilty and wanted to get out of going to jail.

Strange, why retired cops and not cops in active service.

How do you know that then?

My wife has a very famous relative and told me.

This is a remarkable and very commendable sign of integrity on the part of these officers to take this step, and take responsibility for an error in job performance by fellow officers. I don't think that this would very likely happen in any other country than Japan.

I give great respect for this action and hope that this evil man is caught and kept away from society very soon.
