"I was drunk and don't remember" should have been the stock response.

The most heinous of the offenses: destroying the stuffed bear.

If the bear was Kumamon, then they should answer to the wrath of all those who worship Kumamon.

Mauro MdnsToday 03:18 am JSTPaddington Bear obviously has competition.

Who's Paddington Bear? some famous bear from Australia? NZ? kind of the aussie Ted...

Paddington Bear is the main character in a children's book series. I remember them fondly as a kid. A couple movies based on him were made, and the second one (came out a year or two ago) is really really GOOD.

The team were welcomed home as heroes. Nothing in the media or their official Twitter feed even mentions this, though there are some locals posting replies criticizing them for their behavior within the feed.

Worse than the incident itself, it's rather shameful how the Uruguay team has failed to even apologize, offer to pay for damages or express any contrition or even acknowledge the incident. Drunkenness cold be an excuse for the damage, but what is their excuse for walking away from any responsibility for their actions?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What person in their right mind would even think to minimize what these players did, or disagree they should be harshly punished. Alcohol is absolutely no excuse for bad actions anywhere

A bar near me is known for violence and assaults on both men and women but it never makes the news due to the victims and assailants being natives...

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

If the guy smashing the bar is worried about costs, he should have asked the price before he started smashing.

Which is exactly what Kiefer Sutherland did when drunk at a London hotel and destroyed a Christmas tree. He asked, “how much is that tree? I don’t like it, it needs to go.” When the hotel staff informed him of the price, he dive-tackled the tree while yelling, “I love this place.”

You can see the video all over YouTube.

Lucky for them it wasn't a Kumamon. We're relatively tolerant here in Kumamoto, but we would have mauled them back.

Easily the best post here.

It was a "Kumamon" bear, the world famous mascot of Kumamoto

You do realize the world is larger than Japan, correct? This means that just because Kumamon is famous throughout Japan does not make it world famous.

Judges rubber stamp the plaintiffs (often inflationary) demands.

In case like this, that's fine with me. If the guy smashing the bar is worried about costs, he should have asked the price before he started smashing.

Evidence of this? If somebody smashes up my business, I am under no obligation to find the cheapest possible replacements and repairs to save some idiot's money. I wouldn't be wasting my time on it at all if the guys hadn't

Evidence is hard to find. Most foreigners are arrested and make an out of court settlement to avoid prison, and get a suspended sentence. Judges rubber stamp the plaintiffs (often inflationary) demands.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Prices in Japan usually go up depending on how affluent the Japanese perceive the offending foreigners country is.

Evidence of this? If somebody smashes up my business, I am under no obligation to find the cheapest possible replacements and repairs to save some idiot's money. I wouldn't be wasting my time on it at all if the guys hadn't smashed things up.

The place had to close for a couple nights and lost that business, the owner and the staff had to take their time to deal with it, there was the general trouble caused... all this on top of repair costs.

4 million yen sounds pretty light to me. They should be grateful.

Stupid crap like this happens nightly with locals in cities around the country. This is a stunt to squeeze Uruguay to fork over whatever money is asked for real fast.

Oh, right. Japan just decided to shake down some rugby players as they were hosting the world cup.

In civilized countries, when this happens, the people are generally arrested and made to pay for damages. If it happens nightly where you are from, I wonder how any of the bars stay in business.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Video of the incident is circulating on social media. There was no tackle. There was a shove. The incident has been blown out of proportion. Stupid crap like this happens nightly with locals in cities around the country. This is a stunt to squeeze Uruguay to fork over whatever money is asked for real fast.

Looks like they knifed the bear from behind. Sounds about right.

Prices in Japan usually go up depending on how affluent the Japanese perceive the offending foreigners country is.

If the club decides to press charges for damages, the court will determine the amount to be compensated based on an insurance company’s assessment and the sale price of the item/s damaged. Rich or poor, foreign or not, the prices are generally the same.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Right. I also forgot to mention that those prices could easily go 3 to 5 times higher depending on the grade and quality of the items.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

For some peculiar reason, I find this extremely funny!!!

Actually, I have to laugh too. (even though it's not funny)

So a bit of camaraderie gets a little out of hand, it is seen in Japan as crime of the century.

They have apologised, and I am sure that the correct recompense will be given to the bar. When I say correct recompense, that which would be the norm in Japan and not the Foreign Inflationary Recompense.

Then local Japanese will start to think foreigners are rude, without have any clue which country they are coming from.

Hardly, as I say, I think that most Japanese are more intelligent than that.

Even if it happened in their private time, their behavior is regrettable. As the organizing committee of the host country, we hope to address it in good faith,

What does that even mean?

Whether it's a Kumamon or even a teddy bear, these sulking drunken losers took out their frustration on a poor defensive stuffed bear. No class at all, man. No class!

8 ( +8 / -0 )

It was a "Kumamon" bear, the world famous mascot of Kumamoto. They are real expensiv, perhaps 200,000 Yen. This is going to be an enormous bill sent to Uruguay Embassy by the nightclub.

World famous? Well this is the first time I have ever heard of this "world famous bear".

Paddington Bear obviously has competition.

Still, one should always behave in public. I believe that they have apologised.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Bacon egg? ...Okay then

No kidding!

A friend owns a few bars in town. Damage from drunk patrons occurs regularly. One time he had to track down a group of unruly schoolteachers who had destroyed some property and did a runner. This is simply a case of Chicken Little.

Way to ruin your country-men's image. Did they not get the memo about being sports ambassadors?

I'm sure that the good people of Kumamoto are more intelligent than that.

Why were they allowed to fly out?

Since this team are guest, especially to show Japan being nice host for Olympic 2020. So they'll let go this one.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Punish them fully.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

This all followed a "drinking session" which happened to follow a "rugby session". So, I'm not all that surprised, but you wouldn't expect this type of behavior from the Japan team or the All Blacks. Much more professional.

I wouldn't 'expect' it from Japan and/or the AB (and most other NT btw) but i wouldnt be 'that' surprised either (look at what happened with the crusaders during their SA tour a few months ago, NH/SR clubs on tours are no stranger to pub fights/ shenanigans either, same with NT remember Tindall, Bastareaud !? ;)

Rowdy 'third-half' / mad Monday celebrations etc may not be as common as they used to be, they're still part of the game especially in the amateur ranks.

The Uruguayan federation should obviously pay for the damage and deal with it internally (fine/ban the players involved, up to them).

Not a good look but we're only human hey! (could have happened to Hanyu or the table tennis blokes, although probably much earlier in the night!)

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Um, perhaps because the weren't stopped. Just perhaps! (roll eyes)

Yep. The carnage continues even as we speak!

No. Obviously they did stop at some point but we don't when or why. The police may have been called after they were stopped.

This is a joke right?

Pro DJ and sound equipment are very expensive so 4mil yen isnt too crazy.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Typical response from the LOC2019, already avoiding any possible responsibility, which I think they do not have.

But this was certainly NOT in their own time, they were here as part of the national selection of their country, that means, they are part of that selection during the entire stay. Not just on the field.

Remember the Japanese basketball players with the prostitutes in Indonesia ?

The Uruguayan federation should pay for the damage and they can recover it from the players.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

I’m reckoning the “stuffed bear” was one of those huge man-sized things ones that easily cost several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the brand, and they destroyed it by using it as a tackle dummy.

Oh , the shame...

I hate to be the one to say this but when the 2020 Olympics start, you can expect more wild crowds to flood the country and more cases like this would happen a lot more.

Then local Japanese will start to think foreigners are rude, without have any clue which country they are coming from.

Unforgivable. They played badly and were angry, but no need to take it out on a local business in Kumamoto by going on a rampage. Summon the Uruguay Ambassador, make them pay for all damages.

On TV they showed ruined sound equipment, broken windows and holes punched in walls, adding up to about 4 million JPY in damage.

Why? Because it was a group of a dozen or so tanked up international rugby players, not a group of unruly salarymen. Would you jump in to stop them?

They should facing severe disciplinary action from the world cup comity and from their own rugby team management.
