Saitama citizen offers Y1 mil reward in guide dog stabbing case

Many readers likely remember the story about the visually impaired man whose guide dog, Oscar, was stabbed multiple times while the pair was en route to the owner’s workplace. Oscar didn’t bark nor react to the stabbing and it was only when a co-worker saw the blood on him that anyone realized what had happened. An investigation was launched and people around the world reacted in anger and severe disappointment that anyone would harm a dog like this.

But while there are people who will hurt animals, there are even more who are kind and loving to them, and one such man from Saitama is offering a big bounty to find this criminal and put him behind bars.

Wahei Kaneko, a manager of a landscape gardening company in Saitama Prefecture, heard about this crime on the news. He thought, “What can I do to help catch this criminal?” and came up with the idea of a cash reward. With the support of four other employees, Kaneko raised 1,000,000 yen and took it to the police in charge of the case. Kaneko explained, “This crime cannot go unpunished. I want the police to use this money.”

The deputy police chief was astonished by the sum but according to the prefectural authorities, the police department cannot accept donations for special bounties. On the other hand, it is entirely legal for someone to establish a charity organization and hand out the reward that way.

Kaneko owns a beagle as well as two dogs, Fuku and Shima, who were rescued after the Great East Japan Earthquake. A staple at their landscaping business, they are being cared for with the cooperation of his employees, many of whom are animal lovers.

“People can never be allowed to hurt animals. I want this criminal to be caught quickly.”

So what happened to the poor dog? Is he recovering well, or are the wounds too serious for a return as guide dog?

This is not your average dog too. He was working for a visually impaired person and kept going even though he was stabbed. In my eyes, the dog is a true hero and made sure his walker made it to work safely. The stabber is pure scum and deserves to be on the other side of the knife.

What a generous guy.

I echo Mirai's sentiments... totally unforgiveable.

weren't there any eyewitnesses?

From my experience, especially during commuting times, people tend to avoid looking at other people or are way too busy using their phones. Doubt anyone noticed anything.

Oscar is a real hero though. I hope he and his owner are doing well and that somehow the culprit is caught before committing any other crimes.

There are too many crazed loners in Japan. It's unlikely the reward will encourage results. This loon more then likely has no friends and never speaks to anybody besides himself and his TV. I would like to believe otherwise, but........

I wish I knew who this air hole was; I'd drop a brick on him for free.

Fukouchuu no saiwai....

the goodness that bring a disaster... Because of what happen to Oscar, the awareness of people of this type of crime has increased.

In late weeks, in almost every TV they are showing the violence and mistreat the guide dogs have been suffering (1 in every 4 dogs suffer from some kind of mischieving on different degrees).

The pain Oscar suffered, has made able for people to see the evil around..

Disgraceful. Maybe this reward will make them look harder.

This is great news to read this morning. There are wonderful people all over. I applaud Kaneko san and his colleagues for taking the initiative to find that bum that hurt the precious dog Oscar and endangered the life of the visually impaired man.

I hope they find this bastard soon. Stabbing an innocent working dog and terrorizing this poor man is simply unforgivable and unhuman.
