Police in Gifu city have arrested a 38-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of using a stolen cash card to withdraw 2.5 million yen from ATMs. The man got the cash card from an 86-year-old woman by impersonating a police officer.
According to police, Masato Kawai, whose address is unknown, used a stolen cash card to withdraw the money from three ATMs at a convenience store and shopping mall in Gifu in June, Kyodo News reported.
The woman said she had received a phone call from someone who claimed to have “caught the criminal who withdrew money from her bank account.” He also reassured her that the stolen money would be returned and that an officer would visit her home to inspect her cash card to see if it had been forged.
The woman handed over the card after a man claiming to be a police officer showed up at her residence.© Japan Today
