Surprise surprise, another area of society where the use of power or seniority or ability to influence a young person's future is abused.

My advice is for the ladies of Japan (well people in general, but it should be led by the ladies) to boycott Obayashi and Sumitomo Corp until the companies respond to this appropriately. They should also lobby their representatives to ensure that not a single yen of public money goes to these companies until they do.

I think that will be more effective than expecting the families of Japan to raise their sons in some magical way that ensures sexual assault and sexual harassment do not happen. I don't think any country in the world has fully achieved that.

The problem with this and overwork is that there are no repercussions for the companies. So long as public contracts are rolling in, Dentsu might as well continue overworking its staff and other companies might as well turn a blind eye to sexual assault and sexual harassment.

Mothers aren't raising their sons properly, they should instil in them respect for women.

Right, blame it on the women, that men can treat women properly. It's all the women's problem and men are blameless! It's people who think like this and actually say it out loud that are a HUGE part of the problem!

What a croc of BS!

FATHER's should be the ones being the example! But how can boys follow their father's example when they stay out at night drinking at the local snack or cabaret, fooling around with women?

Goodbye Bushido

Hello Appshido

Expat summed it up.

Sexual harassment cases by male employees targeting female students seeking their alumni's help in job-hunting are becoming a widespread problem, according to police and recruitment experts.

It is not becoming a widespread problem, women are just beginning to speak out about it. Welcome to the 1950s.

Japan ranks near the bottom among industrialized nations when it comes to gender equality in the work place and politics.

Embarrassing.

I'm not saying such harassment doesn't happen in other countries, but still, shameful.

Just curious, what incentive would these apps have for alumni?

It's essentially a well-disguised survey /extortion with no benefits.

takes notes while reading the article

It's an old strategy. It's the same as what's his face in Hollywood taking young actresses back to his place because he can "help their career".

Are becoming widespread? It’s akways been the norm. It’s onky that women are speaking up about it more than in the past.

This article bodes well with the recent scandals involving sexual prejudices in university entrance. Japan will always be prejudiced against women and sexually harass women because that is how Japanese culture functions. It will be a cold day in hell when Japanese women receive equal rights from the crony oyajis.

Women with young sons need to realize that they have the power to change the situation by raising their sons differently, and that they have it in their power to do so.

Yes, because we all know it’s just the mothers who should be raising their sons to be better.

This IS the issue. Why it is always left up to women to teach men how to behave? Men aren’t stupid. These guys knew their behaviour is wrong. Where are the men calling out poor behaviour and teaching their sons, friends, dads, not to be jerks?

Why is it that even when some men think they’re being “good” they still can’t see the sexism they display? Women see this. It’s constant. Men, expect men to be better and stop putting this stuff on women to fix.

And you wonder why so many women remain unmarried.

This will continue until Japanese men are raised to respect women.

Don't act as if this is a Japanese thing. Ever hear of the Hollywood casting couch?

I hope no one is gullible enough to believe that this is something new, it's just getting more media attention, and rightfully so as well.

We’d like to think that all women are all independent and strong, but that’s not the case, is it.

Women are socialized to be demure, polite, and to not rock the boat or hurt a man’s ego.

Some women can’t shake off that teaching so can’t stand up and advocate for themselves, and these men take full advantage of that vulnerability.

The problem is twofold: a society that denigrates women who “act like men” and shames them so they conform to outdated and harmful gender roles; and men who perpetuate that shaming precisely because it benefits them as they can take full advantage.

Our role isn’t to criticize women and blame them for being what society has forced them to be. It’s to lift women up and support them do they can become stronger and more independent.

That also means stopping the victim blaming, gender stereotyping, slut shaming, body policing, and denigration of women who defy gender roles.

I continually see that sort of behavior by men on this site here. I want to ask them to be more aware of what they are doing and how their behavior towards young girls and women effects them.

They can find work in prison

Take a face photo and record the audio for the encounter.

If the other person steps over a line there is a record, but never post the recordings. Posting/sharing them is illegal. Use them in court. No need to notify the other person of the recording either, though having it out and visible might deter the improper interaction from starting.

Of course, the rules may be applied differently depending on your passport.

In after-hours business events, I've see J-women harassed terribly by their coworkers. Found it shocking that they didn't sue and end up owning the company after just 1 night. I was embarrassed just being around it.

Nailed it!

How is it viewed if a woman offers herself to a man to receive a favour? Is that harrassment?

Yes.

The two went out for dinner and drinks, where the man forcibly kissed the woman and asked her to come to his place after getting her drunk.

Sexual harassment, forcible kissing, sexual assault, etc., are all horrible.

But this "getting her drunk" comment really makes me bristle.

Unless he was physically forcing the alcohol down her throat, or spiking her nonalcholic drinks, or something like that ... he did not "get her drunk." She got herself drunk!

We can't claim to be "strong independent women" but then blame someone else for our drunkenness.

The sexual harassment and assault is HIS fault. But "getting her drunk" is what she initially did to herself.

they need to teach the sexual harassment victims to report.

as I spoke with a sexual harassment victim by her university teacher, she told me that she is scared to report him because he is "successful" professor and he told her no one will believe her and she will be kicked out of university and will be exposed and cant go to school, have normal life,..

women need to know that they can keep their identity anonymous, and she will be safe from the predator.

of course, the girl should not also receive any kind of financial compensation, so there wont be any false claims by any side. and police need to investigate, for example they ask all the workers to answer anonymously, and see if they respond that there is a person in a company or school that is doing those acts, then they need to check on which person those accusations are frequent then remove that predator from cooperation, -this can apply on the past or ongoing predators-

once they get punished, the coming generations will understand that this unacceptable crime. and it will decrease drastically.

there is very small slow change now, but not nation wide.

So, she had the chance to walk away, but now she is playing the victim

She was a victim because he was forcibly kissing her -- and yes, she also had a chance to walk away but did not.

So, you're incorrect and correct at the same time.

Yes, because we all know it’s just the mothers who should be raising their sons to be better.

I love this because it implies mothers will always do right by their children, and that they'll never teach their sons conservative, strict gender roles, and heteronormativity. You really think that's the case?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

It'll never change, they'll first need to change the sempai/kohai system.

How many times did i heared that a girl didn't had a chose to have intercourse with her sempai because it'll be 'mendoukusai' if she refused to him.

And i think that some women know that to have a chance to get a job you have to give something in return...

Sorry but it goes in both sides!

If it's wasn't so easy to have intercourse then Jguys would stop using this method
