Skeletal remains of 22-year-old woman discovered in Niigata

Police in Shibata, Niigata prefecture, said Wednesday that skeletal remains discovered in a thicket on Monday have been identified as the remains of a 22-year-old woman who had been missing since last November.

According to police, the skeleton was found just before 5 p.m. on Monday by a 70-year-old man who had gone into the field to pick plants.

TV Asahi quoted police as saying that DNA tests on the skeleton revealed that it was Nozomi Tokunaga, a part-time employee who was reported missing last Nov 22 when she left her home to walk to the home of a friend living nearby.

Police said the cause and exact details surrounding her death are not yet known. Near where Tokunaga's remains were discovered, her cell phone and handbag were also found.

I may be jumping to conclusions, but this really is a warning to any young woman walking alone: never stop to help a man in a car, especially at night. ignore the driver and run away as fast as you can.

RIP Girl.

Could be a hit and run case rather than a murder, but I suppose it seems unlikely that she was not previously found if walked directly to her friend's house.

There are very few sidewalks in Shibata and while there is a large town part to it, it mainly a rural disctrict.

How far from the road is the field ? If it was a "hit-and-run" could the body have been thrown into a field ? Since her cellphone and bag were apparently intact, it would seem more like a hit-and-run, but without further details, it's difficult to understand. RIP Nozomi Tokunaga san.

Saw this on the TV, FV. It was on a side road, a sort of lay-by about 50 meters from the main road, a place where people dump trash illegally. Definitely not a-hit-and-run, but possibly a hit-and-carry-and-run, if not a straight murder-and-dump.

Poor girl... what a way to end up. At least her parents can give her a decent burial now. RIP Nozomi.

May the Lord wipe your tears and give you everlasting life and love.

Why everyone saying hit and run? Most likely sex crime... ?

It could be a sex crime because it did say she was found in a thicket and that sounds more like a sex crime than a hit and run and if it was wouldn't the skeleton have broken parts to it and the police would have said it was a hit and run if it had broken parts of the skeleton so it was a sex crime or a simple murder not a hit and run.

I'm in complete agreement with rickyvee above. To the young women out there, don't just walk away but run for the hills screaming like you're insane if you're ever in a face to face situation with a potential nut job. Regardless of how harmless they may seem, run! Case in point, Ted Bundy.

RIP

A link to the news report. As you can see, it is very far from any real road or houses, which makes it seem more likely to be a dumped body. However, if you wanted to dump a body, the mountains are not too far away.

The river is almost certainly the Kajikawa.

"cell phone, handbag, found and Skeletal remains of Nozomi Tokunaga 22-year-old woman a part-time employee discovered in Niigata" "Police said the cause and exact details surrounding her death are not yet known."

Grim..and creepy... call in the psychic detectives

Makes you wonder about the original missing person from back in November. If the cell phone had been on, they should have been able to triangulate it's position. At least she's been found and can be returned to her family. RIP.

Stun guns and pepper spray are legally available in Japan. Run if you can, fight if you must.

I feel terrible for the poor woman and also for her family.

Hope they identify the perp and serve the proper justice. It's such a waste when a person as young as her dies.
