Police in Shibata, Niigata prefecture, said Wednesday that skeletal remains discovered in a thicket on Monday have been identified as the remains of a 22-year-old woman who had been missing since last November.
According to police, the skeleton was found just before 5 p.m. on Monday by a 70-year-old man who had gone into the field to pick plants.
TV Asahi quoted police as saying that DNA tests on the skeleton revealed that it was Nozomi Tokunaga, a part-time employee who was reported missing last Nov 22 when she left her home to walk to the home of a friend living nearby.
Police said the cause and exact details surrounding her death are not yet known. Near where Tokunaga's remains were discovered, her cell phone and handbag were also found.© Japan Today
