Police in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, said a skeletonized body has been found at an apartment in Sakae Ward.

According to police, the body, which was found on Tuesday, has been dead for a few years and its gender and age were not identifiable, Fuji TV reported.

This case came into light when a woman who lives in the apartment consulted a Sakae Ward Office worker and said that her husband, who was in his 60s, passed away a few years ago but she was financially in trouble so she left him there.

Police said the woman faces a charge of abandoning a body.

"Police said the woman faces a charge of abandoning a body."

That's it? Certainly there have got to be other things she can be charged with, especially since it's entirely possible she murdered him and this is her slow but effective way of getting off basically Scott free. Was she collecting benefits for those years? I'm guessing yes, since otherwise she would have to report that they no longer need them.

Seriously, is this really a society which let's this happen? If this happened to my neighbour, who I don't speak to incidentally, I would help. If of course her story about financial difficulty is true. If she killed him, I'll pay for the rope..

sounds like the plot outline of a Stephen King pot-boiler.

'Morning sweetheart. Cup of tea? Oh yeah, that's right.'

or

'All you do is just lie around all day! How about you get up and do the vacuuming once in a while, ya lazy sack of bones!'

or.....

Did she actually abandon the body if the body was still in the place where they lived?

Well, you are one in a million. Not many people would shell out cash for someone they don't know

Skeletonized body! . . . has been dead for a few years!

Try a decade or more. It takes a long time for the soft body parts to rot away and then you need an agent (vermin, insects or bacteria) to "clean" things up. No one noticed the smell as the corpse was decomposing?

According to police, the body, . . . gender and age were not identifiable, . . . said that her husband, who was in his 60s, passed away a few years ago but she was financially in trouble so she left him there.

I never know whether it's bad reporting, bad translation or some combination of the two.

Technically she didn't abandon the body. She was living with it.

Despite the above, it makes me sick hearing stories like this constantly. My friends and family are constantly asking me if it's really that safe and amazing here in Japan, and then I have to tell them about the amount of suicide, family murders, sickos taking underwear, etc...

@smithinjapan

You should know by now that this is standard procedure for the police here so they can detain and start investigating.
