A stolen car being pursued by a police car hit and killed a 74-year-old woman cyclist in Nagoya, police said Thursday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday in Showa Ward. Sankei Shimbun reported that a police patrol car spotted a station wagon that had been reported as stolen. Police ordered the car to pull over but the driver took off. About 1.9 kms away, the car hit the cyclist at an intersection.

The cyclist, identified as Sadako Hisano, sustained severe head injuries. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the stolen station wagon abandoned the vehicle about 500 meters further on from the accident scene and fled on foot. However, he was arrested in Naka Ward on Thursday morning after police received a telephone call from someone who knew him. Police identified the suspect as Ryo Shinozuka, 21, and said he did not have a driver's license. Police said Shinozuka, who is unemployed, will be charged with dangerous driving resulting in death.

Don't blame the police for doing their job. The criminal has committed several felonies, and should be put away for a very long time.

actually its common for police to be called off hot pursuit cause they get blamed for putting pressure on the driver and causing them to drive dangerously. i.e. if you didn't chase me i wouldn't have driven so fast and got out of control and killed that person...stupid if you ask me.

Don't blame the police for doing their job.

I would be surprised if anyone did.

Odd comment. The tite just states the fact that it was being chased by the police. There can be no blame and clearly isn't any, towards the police for doing their job.

As for the lady who lost her life, man... it's terribly unfortunate.

Scumbag. Put him on the Senkakus for 10 years.

Where was a "high speed" chase mentioned? The thief/killer was being pursued, but he decided to speed off.

Similar thing happened last week here in the London where a child and his Aunt were killed by a motorist trying to escape a cop car.

this young guy is looking at no second chances..he is pretty much a goner..sad to say

Why is it sad? The kid deserves to be locked away for a bunch of years. He killed a lady through his stupidity.

Um. That was a stroke of bad luck for the old woman. RIP. You never know what can happen. Let's be careful!

dangerous driving resulting in death

I'd like to see this offence worded more seriously!

I only hope the offender is given a very heavy penalty.

No, you cannot blame the police as they are only doing their prescribed job. The culprit is entirely to blame for the death of the innocent cyclist. Having said that, there has got to be an alternative to car chases that too often result in innocent people dying. This is problem the police have an obigation to consider and to solve.

Seriously?

Wasn't it only a few weeks ago when someone was killed as the direct result of a police car chase?

WHEN will these cops ever learn that high speed chases only serve to put the lives of innocent civilians in danger?

hmm, to all the newbies in the forum, this is more serious than just being locked away forever. He is not mega rich who in this case would walk away after paying a large hefty sum, to surviving family members,, this young guy is looking at no second chances..he is pretty much a goner..sad to say...here is Japan.

"...will be charged with dangerous driving resulting in death."

That's it? No fleeing from police charge? No driving without a license? Lock the guy up for life!

"Dangerous driving resulting in death" is a far more serious charge than driving without a license. It is the charge that will probably get him locked up for some years. This came in with the 2014 revision of the law. You can get twenty years in the can for this.

It is not obvious why the police should charge him with a relatively minor offense when they have him on a major one.
