Stuffed teenage girls arrested for trying to eat and run at restaurant

Four 15-year-old middle school girls were arrested Tuesday for attempting to eat and run at a Japanese restaurant where they had ordered and consumed 20,000 yen of food. The girls, who over three hours ate shabu shabu, fried chicken, edamame, french fries, chocolate parfaits and other foods, told police they had heard from a friend that it was possible to run without paying at the restaurant.

One of the girls was quoted by police as saying, "We thought we could eat things we normally couldn't afford."

After the girls entered the restaurant, which has not been named, they sat in a private room near a window that was big enough for a person to fit through. After eating around 30 different dishes, two girls went out the front entrance while the other two climbed out the window into the parking lot.

The restaurant had been subject to similar incidents in the past, and the manager noticed something was strange after he saw shoes outside the room but no one inside. The girls split into pairs and fled on bicycles, but an employee was able to catch up to them in a car about one kilometer from the restaurant.

Must be a slow news day, the JP catching the dangerous criminals in Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This is a good example of when a translation just makes for an awkward headline. For a second I thought they stuffed their bras and were arrested.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sad to see the degradation of Japanese society firsthand. It’s fair to say that one out of the four girls may think that this was no big deal and will continue through life with that same attitude.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well I am guessing they just biked down the main street in lala land at a snails pace while emailing all their friends photos of the food they stole and gloating about it. Idiots!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Japanese "kui-nige" -- literally eat and flee -- is indeed translated here. It is understandable but not as idiomatic as "leave without paying." (In English the "eat" part would be understood.)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The future mothers of japan........no need to worry here folks. This country is in safe hands!!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Sad to see the degradation of Japanese society firsthand." Are you serious? This is just kids being kids...they will all grow up to be good people...just a little misbehaving by youth. No Big Deal!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No I'm not serious, I want my kid to go out and do the same thing, like you.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Dine and Dash LOL!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Part of me says, if this is making the headlines, Japan is still ok. The headlines in Australia involving teenagers are the kinds of things nightmares are made of. A few fatties doing a sit and run is just as melove said "kids being kids".

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh, c'mon, noirgaijin. I'm pretty sure they'll turn out to be good citizens a couple of decades from now and will have a good laugh recalling about this adventure especially ending up in a gaijin news. You see, there quiet obedient teenagers who turn out to be a criminals. We can never tell. Yeah, probably it's one of JTs quiet moments that made this news in the front page.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Youth what fun.

Nice Headline!

A+

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Go tell that to the establishment that just got bilked out of 20,000 or more. I can't count how many small businesses go out of business because of the attitude of kids just being kids. This is some ones livelihood and folks who believe it’s okay because they are kids, well until it happens to you then it must be okay.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

good for all of you...Cheers..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great joke this one. Hope the Prosecutor's Office also gets a laugh when they stick these kids with a criminal record that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Sad to see the degradation of Japanese society firsthand."

A bit of an exaggeration, don't you think? Dining and dashing has a long and proud tradition all over the world. Chased my fair share of kids when I used to work in a restaurant.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

" the manager noticed something was strange after he saw shoes outside the room but no one inside. "

They wanted to flee barefoot??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

hahaha.thats awesome..ive done that but barefoot??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

noirgaijin, lighten up! Their families will pay gomen money which will exceed the bill. timorborder, just as in the USA this sort of crime will not follow them around forever. Yawns! a slow day in the news!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great joke this one. Hope the Prosecutor's Office also gets a laugh when they stick these kids with a criminal record that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

Another typical uninformed remark. As in the US, juvenile misdemeanor records are buried in Japan and not accessible to the prosecutor's office.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

At least they didn't go down hungry...fools .

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why do they say arrested in the news for underage people that can't be arrested, perhaps arrested doesn't mean also charged in Japan? I think the translation here needs to be held.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They wanted to flee barefoot??

That's what I was thinking.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I expect the parents will suitably reimburse the restaurant so its not such a big problem and the young girls will be spending time on the balcony no doubt. All is well in the end.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

YuriOtani - Call me old-fashioned, but back in the day thieves in this county (depending on the feudal domain) used to get their crimes tattooed on their face. Indeed, using such methods to fight crime among the young might lead to a dramatic fall in crime rates.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Thanks to people like this, trust gradually gets eroded. Maybe one day the world will work its way back to being able to trust again. Trust factor still 80% here in Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

told police they had heard from a friend that it was possible to run without paying at the restaurant.

Someone should run and tell their friends that sometimes bank robbers "get away with it" too (with the help of lighter fluid). I heard some get away with it, so, you know, give the fun game a try. And then you can buy all the food you want, proper-like.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I wonder if they all had their houses searched?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Timotborder: in this generation? I don't think so. I guess it face tatoos will become fashionable that you won't know who's the "real" criminal anymore. As YuriOtani said, lighten up guys!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

4 15yr old girls eating 30 different dishes = must be a new eat-and-run record.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

done miles worse things than this when i was a teen, and no way would it get press. It`s only a silly prank, for gawds sake.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah, this is quite typical misbehavior of teens. I suppose arresting them might scare them into shaping up. But likely the kids will get off with an apology and a promise to never do it again and the parents will pay a big fine. What about giving them some real consequences for their crime like community service or something.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

methods to fight crime among the young might lead to a dramatic fall in crime rates.

Ummm yeah because I cant leave my apartment due to the crime in Japan hahaha! Japan doesnt even have a crime rate. Let me guess - your upbringing was less than pleasant?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What about giving them some real consequences for their crime like community service or something.

Be better off to bang them up with some time in juvenile detention. Society needs to stop pampering these "kids." They are 15 years old and they should take responsibility for their actions. I just wish somebody would force a case like this to trial. Perhaps the business in question should demand that these girls get their day in court. After that the business can pursue the parents through civil proceedings. Kick up a stink and really drop this delinquents in it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Life is an ongoing learning process, im sure these girls will understand that you cannot eat and run from now on.

Anyway we all have youths in our society that do outrages things.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

timorborder, best thing is for these kids to get a warning and to clean up Japan imprison all the politicians and their construction/yakuza mates instead. This shouldn`t be news.

Arrest the real criminals instead Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The most lenient society on earth, 4 deep bows and an envelope (10k each), done (excluding drugs on my remark)... Must admit, it was a dumb move but I agree with the above 2 posts.... sad thing is... nothing will change and these kids pulled a typical Stand By Me... Hey, kids do dumb stuff but as nation they must clamp down on moral reevaluations... On a light note, they would get the book in many other countries, jesus, maybe even a caning for each dish in Singapore... Mid East and China would be brutal too....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

lol cmon people! lighten up! It would be a real pleasure to meet some of you stiffs in real life. This happens all over the world, everyday. I did it...and got away with it when I was a teen...big deal. Denny's is still standing strong. Have the girls pay a fine to cover the bill. End of story.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Stuffed teenage girls...", that headline I find to be absolutely hilarious. Someone must have used a great deal of time thinking that one up.

Back on topic, if the manager found shoes outside the room but no one inside, does that mean one or more of the girls fled barefoot?

And the girls should be given some praise, after all there mode of escape was very ecologically friendly.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

timorborder: I have to disagree. Putting them into a juvenile detention center will do the teens no good. In fact, it's possible that they will actually come out worse than when they went in. They also could be abused. What these kids did was stupid and wrong but a minor crime so why should society have to pay for what should be the parents job?--disciplining their kids and teaching them to be responsible for their actions.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The girls, who over three hours ate shabu shabu, fried chicken, edamame, french fries, chocolate parfaits and other foods,

sorta contradicts yesterday's story about how healthy japan is, deshoo ?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Scare the bejeezuz out of them by taking their mug shots and fingerprints, giv'em a fine and some community work, and they'll turn out fine. No big deal, but make it a big deal for them and they won't do it again... unless these girls are the "homeless" type of schoolgirls like Bamboohat mentioned, in which case, deeper issue.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"...over three hours ate shabu shabu, fried chicken, edamame, french fries, chocolate parfaits..."

As a father of two teenagers, I am more interested in what they chose to eat. French fries and parfaits?!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm guessing the headline has nothing to do with taxidermy.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I have done this before back in my college days and felt bad about it. My friends split on me when I went to the toilet, and I just did not have the cash to pay for six. So, I did it too. Hard part was going back to get my car.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Good to see a bit of larrikin spirit in Japanese kids for once! Haven't heard of anything like this among them before - I never thought they had any rebelliousness in 'em! Good luck to the girls - rap over the knuckle I say!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

[They wanted to flee barefoot??]

Got the Idea from Ichihashi. If barefoot the police can't catch you. But a restaurant manager can.

Stuffed Teenage Girls: Girls who have been prepared by a taxidermist. Make great girlfriends for typical japanese nerds that hang around game shops.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That reminds me of when I was in high school. We use to sometimes do that at the Pizza Inn Buffet.

Kids will be kids! Punish them but not too harshly. Just scare them enough to learn the error of their ways.

I would think the girls would have been smart enough to at least get their shoes. It was probably why they couldn't peddle fast enough to get away.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

im sure these girls will understand that you cannot eat and run from now on

Or avoid major roads when getting away.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Guys, it was a dine and dash, not murder. Prettyt tame stuff by most standards. While I admit it certainly isn't a victimless crime, it hardly rises to the level of prostitution, drug use, or bank robbery.

But I agree with Timborder to some extent: These kids need a good scare to nudge them towards behaving a little more responsibily. A night of lockup in the local jail might do wonders for these kids' attitudes.

But in my experience, getting caught once is usually enough to dissuade this kind of offense in the future. It was a thrill-seeking endeavor, and little else. They're done with this little experiment, I think.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Min wage in Hyogo is 721 en/hr

4 kids @ 10hr each dishwashing will have that debt cleared up and a bit of extra as punishment

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not a bad idea. That's how it would've been done 70 years ago or so where I'm from.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

they ate shabu shabu but police described what looked like okonomiyaki splattered on the ground near the girls feet after they had been caught.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Riding a bicycle without shoes? That would have hurt a lot if the pedals weren't the plastic type - not that the plastic type won't hurt. Maybe they were caught because of having a passenger (2 girls on one bike, one with shoes was driving) but confessed to not paying.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For me ,the heading of the article wins todays star prize, dissapointed with the article ,but the heading, now that does show possibilities.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

[...] the manager noticed something was strange after he saw shoes outside the room but no one inside.

So they fled without shoes?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great news...surely more important things in Japan to report about ???

0 ( +0 / -0 )

neverknow2

I wonder if they all had their houses searched? Or is that only for Americans?

SMAP Kusanagi's is American for you ? (April09)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The parents should be made to escort the younguns to the restaurant and apologize to the manager and waitstaff - people who think things in life aren't free and need to be earned.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I thought this only happen in anime or J-drama and not in real life. I just don't know what to say...How could the girls not be embarrassed?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Stuffed girls did not get stuck in window" sounds good to me.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think that communitty service can be a good punishment. Something like take care of ojisans in an hospital.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Now their parents will leave them to play with dogs at a park so they might drown in a puddle.....;(

0 ( +0 / -0 )

the manager noticed something was strange after he saw shoes outside the room but no one inside.

Once at a restaurant I worked at, a fellow dine-n-dashed with a fairly clever ruse. He left "his" windbreaker and ball cap on the seat at his table while he "went out to his car to get something." Never saw him again.

These girls may have just left an old pair of shoes there. It's not as if shoes in Japan aren't ubiquitous enough, with everyone owning multiple pairs to fit the occasion. Or maybe they simply placed another costomer's shoes in front of their table.

Personally, I suspect the restaurant employee was able to catch up with them because they were, well, stuffed. Kind of hard to run when you've downed 30 dishes in a single sitting. In any case, no one's ever said these girls were particularly bright.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I am so glad they were caught. This type of rude behaviour is common here in Australia.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

dolphingirl:

why should society have to pay for what should be the parents job?--disciplining their kids and teaching them to be responsible for their actions.

hahaha, parenting in Japan, thats a good one.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I've noticed a trend of more and more girls becoming delinquents over the last few years, especially at high school age (cos I work in high schools). It used to be the boys being rambunctious trouble makers, but now the girls are the trouble makers and the boys are too busy with their make up mirrors.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This was just pure gluttony and greed. Eating 30 dishes is wasteful and selfish, especially in light of the global food crisis. These girls should be sentenced to raise money for the global food charities and possibly even sent on a trip to somewhere like Ethiopia to work for free for a couple of months so they can appreciate just what a wasteful and disgusting thing they did.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Could they have not split in 4 different directions? Or they were all heading back to the same dormitory? Great story on dine-and-dash, or eat-and-run.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We can sleep soundly at night. The parfait criminals have been caught!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I guess they never heard of the sugar daddy program?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Frungy said: This was just pure gluttony and greed. Eating 30 dishes is wasteful and selfish, especially in light of the global food crisis.

Lighten up. Obviously you've never seen the size of some of the "dishes" in Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Typical spoilt japanese girls never get a part time job because it,s frowned upon at that age in this country... They don,t know the value of money or their parents haven,t brought them up the right way... These girls should work for free at that p.articular restaurant to give them a sense of real work and contribution.....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

this sort of thimg happens lot. the comments here are tooooooooo up tight take it easy bloggers !!!! uptight arm chair police & judges.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If I was the manager of the restaurant. I would let the parents pay and give the kids a job there.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Still say it is a slow day for news, timorborder this is such a petty crime

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They were living in the world of fool that they could escape doing such stupid thing and more alarming that anyone of them didn't think about the wasting of food they committed. The girls should join the food charity program and serve food for the homeless in the prefecture.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah very light civil service would be good. Maybe washing dishes, or standing outside promoting the restaurant. Kids need a whack upside the head sometimes and learning that nothing is free is very important.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

some friends of mine did this in London. One of them was caught and made to pay for the whole meal. He was the only one in the group not in the know and very pissed off with his mates. He happens to be half Italian and the Italian owners of the restaurant weren't understanding!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

chott:..."parfait" criminals...funny

0 ( +0 / -0 )

From a vantage point of view, it's very funny. Mid-teenagers go to the restaurants and eat out worthy 20,000 yen ($220!!!)? That's way too much expense for these girls. So hard to imagine this type of minor offense in other countries, especially in the US. They may get busted for shoplifting, but they don't often go to the restaurants on their own, you know.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We thought we could eat things we normally couldn't afford.

Fried chicken, edamame, french fries ??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Obviously so many of us do not know what size dish is with the food in it. It is simply to hard for us to assume other then think this was pure gluttony along with planned idea of stealing much the same as stealing in a store of things like clothing, to you name it.

So in honestly we are sort of left baffled though a bit left down when it comes to STEALING.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Were they a starvened gang of nefarious crooks?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

thats sad if your gonna do that you need to do it right. they shouldnt be stealing though

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They are young and starting to train themselves to become a real criminals. Now it the time to lock them up for a while with hard criminals, and let them learn what fuiture is waiting for them!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

yeah bad but not really serious. Just make them Work a Hard JOB, Not at Restaurant. to make them pay off the Bill. it was called "dine & Dash" in America in the 80's usually police were called or Parents and the kids/Parent had to pay the bill.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

LOL...Dine and dash is timeless...and apparently universal! It wasn't that serious a crime and yeah, scare the poop out of the girls for it so they don't do it again. That's what most folks do with teenagers who try to pull a fast one and get caught.

They don't really have much of a future as criminals anyway (a little on the stupid side, these gals), so might as well scare them straight before they commit another dumbass crime at an age where their record will be permanent.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"( they couldn't afford )Fried chicken, edamame, french fries???"

Hey, they're not cheap!

"an employee was able to catch up to them in a car about 1 kilometer from the restaurant"

I hope the employee wasn't speeding. Nice work!

I suggest the girls be made to work at the restaurant on weekends for free for a few weeks.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"We thought we could eat things we normally couldn't afford"

Hey, at least they're not doing enjo kosai.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sooo, I guess these girls aren't worried about getting fat... unless they thought that they'd lose some of it running away.

Btw, someone mentioned that underaged girls can't be arrested, you're wrong. Also, being arrested doesn't necessarily mean in handcuffs and behind bars. They were simply held for a while, which is still arrested.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If this wasn't real life, it'd be hilarious.

Most definitely, they need to pay the restaurant back for what they ate.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The slim healthy employee was able to catch the plump girls laden down with food! HAHAHAHA
