Fast food chain Sukiya has seen a sharp reduction in the number of robberies taking place at its stores, the National Police Agency says.
According to the NPA, Sukiya stores had become a target for robberies in 2011, with 38 cases reported at its branches between January and the end of May last year. By contrast police say that only 14 robberies have been reported at Sukiya stores during the same period of 2012, NTV reported.
Police say the improvements are a result of the Sukiya chain operator Zensho taking preventative measures such as hiring more night staff, and installing wireless emergency buttons in its stores.
Last October, the NPA released a report in which it said Sukiya is targeted by thieves because the restaurants usually only have one worker on duty at night and the cash register is kept near the entrance at most of its stores. It urged Zensho to install security cameras and not keep so much cash on the premises.
Other gyudon companies, such as Matsuya, started using ticket-vending machines instead of cash registers.
Last year, comments describing Sukiya as an easy target because of its lax security were circulating on the Internet and mobile phone sites.

Robberies? Gyu-don say?
Gurukun
It takes 28 times before the chain does something?
Even after taking different measures, 14 isn't a number to be cheering about either.
smithinjapan
So in other words, they've decided that common sense actually makes more sense than the bottom line?

Gurukun and Smith,
Exactly right....
It only took a mere 28 times for this company to realise its security was a joke. Pretty sad that. I guess they really didnt really look into the reasons for the attacks after number 1 or how to prevent them in the future. How pathetic.

The food there isn't good enough even to steal.
CrazyJoe
Just use " Meal Ticket Vending Machines" like Matsuya.

@gurukun
Exactly wth. 14 robberies is A LOT.
TokyoGas
Matsuya has been using ticket machines for years and years.
Badge213
Matsuya, even though they use ticket machines still have cash registers on site, you might notice if someone needs a refund or makes a special order they will pay at the register instead of the vending machines.

1st step: Try to scare criminals by Broadcasting on the News that you will begin to implement counter measures to combat theft. 2nd step: Do nothing. 3rd step: Broadcast on the News that said countermeasures are working. 4th step: High fives
lol Anyway, good on them if robbery has decreased. Hope they can keep it up. Do the wireless buttons signal the police or just make loud noises?

All this will end when finally money get's out from circulation and everybody uses electronic money backed up by more biometric identification systems.

So they are finally going to "beef up" security.

28 robberies is not a lot for a massive food chain. I'd say they responded remarkably fast considering the cost and logistics required for those countermeasures.

@pietro zuco yep and wave goodbye to your privacy, government will know where you are and everything you buy all of the time!

The paintballs (orange paint) near the cash register look funny. I wonder if kids will try to take one and throw around.

I'm sorry, where's everyone getting this number '28' from????? (The article says 38 robberies between Jan and May of 2011, and 14 during the same time frame this year).......................???????
Guillaume Varès
In order to decrease the amount of cash on site, what about pushing for credit card payment (and mobile wallet) ?

The paintballs look like pokeballs! "Gotta catch 'em all!"
