Police have arrested a 50-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed a supermarket employee outside the store in Hachioji, Tokyo, on Tuesday.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 5:15 p.m., Fuji TV reported. The victim, a 55-year-old man, whose job is to watch out for shoplifters, was stabbed in the chest. The suspect was subdued by passersby until police arrived.

Hasn't there been a lot of stabbing incidents related to Hachioji?

A 55 year old man killed a 50 year old man. WOW okay. Watch out for low wage 50 something year old men in big cities now!

Shoplifting G-man.

Ya think??

A fruitcake.

i can buy that. The employees job was to look out for shoplifters, and had followed the suspect outside, so maybe the employee suspected him of shoplifting and was detaining him. maybe the suspect was just trying to get away. the attempted murder charge should stick though.

Time for some action. Keep Fruit-cakes away from the fruit knife.

If by "these people" you mean the perpetrator then he probably will be jailed.

The have been quite a lot of violent incidents in Japanese supermarkets and convenience stores in recent months. Perhaps it’s time they started to employ real security guards instead staff putting their lives on the line.

This go-to excuse is just absurd. Honestly, how thick are these people that they think this excuse would land them a get-out-of-jail-free card?

What is going on???.These people should be jailed.
Fighto!
Glad the innocent shop staff is OK.
Heres hoping the violent scum spends his miserable last days locked away.

Unless the original text was changed, the author used the correct plural form of 'passerby', which is "passersby".
Hiro
I am curious just what item he had shoftlifted to willing to have to try to kill the employee and risk a long time in jail. Also respect to the passerby for restraining him.
Daninthepan
a passerby or passerbies?

The intent was there from the beginning. Who carries around a fruit knife?
garypen
Did the author mean "ensued"?
Moderator: Yes, thanks for pointing that out.
Alex
Who walks around with a fruit knife??
Zaphod
Well, intent or not, but what possible outcomes does he expect when he stabs someone in the chest with a fruit knife? That excuse should not fly.
Sven Asai
Of course he did, when going for the chest, otherwise he would have hurt arm, leg or better only given in putting his knife down instead.
