Don't get me wrong. If this is the murderer then good on the police for acting so quickly. But from a perspective of good legal diligence, and so typical of Japanese law enforcement working with national media to seal their case, I am really uncomfortable with how NHK reported on the accused last night. Not only naming the suspect but showing his picture and video footage. And despite him only being accused at this stage at a very early part of evidence gathering, the NHK anchorman condemning someone who has not yet been to court to face the evidence.

I really hope that the DNA match was found on the grassland and not on the poor deceased girls hand, as this article already confirms that the accused used to high-five with kids on their way to school.

But like I said, if it was him then well done for the fast work. But make sure your case in court is certain.

@Disillusioned

If "they" (the police?) have to "prove" he did kill her before he can be indicted, then surely the need for any kind of trial will have been obviated.

He cannot be indicted for murder unless they can prove he did kill her, which means they either need a confession or a witness.

Well, the first half of your sentence is correct, but not the second half. There are other ways to prove a murder, and as Educator has pointed out twice now, there is another article in the news right now about a woman who got the death penalty for three murders, without a confession or a witness.

This is the way the law works in Japan.

I don't believe it does work that way.

While realizing that a patrol may not be formally contracted or paid, or work long, do people who work with children or vulnerable adults in any role in Japan have security vetting as they would back home?

The evidence is pretty damning, you have to agree.

The evidence as it has been presented appears to be damning.

We can only hope that they are not embellishing the presentation of said evidence. It's hard to trust the police here on that though - they have a bad history which always casts doubt on anything they present as fact.

if it's him or whoever .. i'd like to know what are their motivation for killin a child :/

They will charge him with murder after finding his DNA on her. They only charge with the lesser crime of abandoning a body so they can quickly detain him so he doesn't run away.

They so this in the US all the time, charging murder suspects with drug charges so they can detain him and gather evidence without fear he will flee.

Without a confession or a witness he cannot be charged with murder.

Is this opinion, or are you trying to say there is a law that doesn't allow for indictment if there is no confession nor witness?

I hope it's the guy but all evidence is circumstantial.

It was just on the news. He had a second vehicle (a camping car) he kept parked away from his house address. Police have taken both cars for forensic examination.

I heard on the news that his own daughter is her classmate. That would makes sicker than sick. If you doubt his guilt, then why did they find his own DNA any there? Also, when did he give them his DNA sample before? How did they know that it was his if they didn't already had a sample?

I have a lot of sympathy for people make mistakes, but not for people who do this to kids. . . .

If this is true, I feel sorry for his children as well as the victim and the victim's family. This will be like a bomb going off in their lives. So much pain and damage from his sick act.

While revulsion toward the perpetrator is a natural reaction and condemnation of such an act is universal, it is nevertheless perhaps telling of the human condition that few people seem willing to enter the dark regions of the human mind to search for a motive or attempt to understand the sickness of heart that might have driven a person to such a heinous deed. Calls for revenge are understandable, but even the death penalty will never put a stop to the murderous impulses lurking beneath the mask of normality worn by such sick individuals. More research needs to be done on these tortured and twisted souls who cause so much suffering to others including their own family and friends. I hope people will spare a thought for the latter, too.

@Strangerland - Is this opinion, or are you trying to say there is a law that doesn't allow for indictment if there is no confession nor witness?

I expected more from you Strangerland. He cannot be indicted for murder unless they can prove he did kill her, which means they either need a confession or a witness. As it stands now, they can only charge him with abandoning the body. This is the way the law works in Japan. I thought you would have known that. You seem to know everything else.

If this is true, I feel sorry for his children

How does the poor mom explain to her kids that dad is in jail for murder. Rough.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

It's still not enough to convict him of murder. Without a confession or a witness he cannot be charged with murder. Of course, everyone has feelings that he is guilty as sin. His silence is enough to make him guilty by media trial. If he was innocent he would be screaming denial. Let's just hope another witness pops up or he man's up and confesses.
