On Nov 22, a 35-year-old man who taught at an Otsu City elementary school resigned after it came to light that he unlawfully entered a women’s toilet of Shiga University. However, according to the scant details of this case it appears this might just be a case of being in the absolute worst place at the wrong time.
According to MSN Sankei News West, shortly after midnight on April 20, the teacher stopped by the Shiga University Faculty of Education building. As he later explained, “I entered the school building because I thought I’d try to remember the time when I aspired to be a teacher.”
However, his particular method of entry drew concern as it was the window to the ladies’ toilet. Upon entering, he heard a noise coming from one of the stalls and ran away. He would later say that it was “only by chance the lock on the women’s restroom window was open so I entered through there.”
Internet readers reacted to the teacher’s incident saying, “That’s some excuse,” and “I guess back when he aspired to be a teacher he also went into the women’s restroom.” One thing they all seemed to overlook was the time that he entered the building.
Seeing as it was after midnight, he couldn’t have expected to get an unethical peek at anything. Even if his master plan was to hide out and wait there until morning, what would he have possibly achieved? Sixteen continuous hours of scents and sounds?
On the other hand, this incident happened in April, but the man wasn’t arrested for unlawful entry until Oct 22. Perhaps in that six-month investigation of someone entering the ladies’ room and running away, the authorities uncovered something else about this person?
Whatever the clandestine details of this case were, the teacher was handed down a 100,000 yen fine from Otsu Summary Court on Nov 1 and later given a one month suspension from his school. However, on the same day of the suspension he voluntarily resigned.
Either way you look at it this story comes to an unsettling conclusion. If he was just taking a stroll down memory lane, then he paid an extremely heavy toll for it. But then, if he was up to no good in that toilet, then it would have to have been something really creepy.

My answer would depend 100% on everything else that I know about the person. If he was a great person and great teacher otherwise, then sure, I'd be willing to overlook this. Ideally every person who came into contact with my 7 year old would be a perfect saint, but in reality we have to pick and choose the flaws that we accept and those that we do not.

I've ACCIDENTALLY walked into women's washrooms over the course of my life and was once locked in one by bullies at a camping site (ended up being awesome as the young woman in the bathroom and I really bonded), but of course immediately ran out when I realized my mistake -- and obviously it was a mistake. Climbing in the window though? hard to call that a mistake.

Maybe I'm too trusting, but his story seems kind of reasonable to me, and the punishment seems excessive. There's so many stories of teachers doing perverted things, but I don't want to jump to that conclusion automatically. Think about a school - most teachers would be sure to lock their classroom windows. But whose job is it to make sure the toilet windows are locked? It makes sense that if there is some unlocked window, that it would be in the toilet.
Certainly it's stupid to break into a school, and there ought to be some punishment for that. But maybe he was a little drunk and feeling nostalgic and just wanted a walk down memory lane. That makes perfect sense to me. Unwise, but understandable. I don't want to group him together with some of the disgusting actions of other teachers.
