Teacher arrested for assaulting 13-year-old student

Police in Osaka said Tuesday they have arrested a 33-year-old junior high school teacher on suspicion of assaulting a 13-year-old student. Police said Hiroyoshi Omatsu choked the boy at around 11:30 a.m. on March 8 in a classroom, Sankei Shimbun reported. The boy's parents noticed bruises on his neck when he returned home.

Police said Omatsu, who is the boy’s homeroom teacher, admits to assaulting the student, but denies choking him. He told police he called the student into the classroom during recess and punished him for sleeping in class. He was quoted as saying, “I scolded him many times, but he wouldn’t change his behavior.”

The Osaka City Board of Education said Omatsu is also a guidance counselor at the school. Since being hired in 2009, he has been reprimanded twice for physical abuse toward students. The education board said it will take disciplinary measures after further investigation of the incident.

LOL. And a guidance counselor to boot. You just couldn't make this stuff up. Perhaps another stern lecture or reprimand will do the trick--the 3rd time often being the charm. Maybe his principal can smack him around a bit.

And why not name the school. Were the previous two incidents disclosed to the public? OIJ would a teacher be allowed by both the board of education and parents to continue stepping foot into a school after repeated assault of children under his care. And people wonder why kids bully when given such glowing role models.

He should be band from working with children for life, its this type of brushing under the carpet/ 2nd,3rd chance that come before tragedy.

If the kitchen heats up too much, it's best to get out of there before doing something you regret later. If you're going to be a teacher, especially for JHS students in Japan, you'd better have really thick skin.

I've heard credible stories of JHS students physically assaulting their teachers, but those stories don't usually make it to the newspapers due to the fact that they're minors.

Spare the rod, spoil the child? Obviously the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Dumb teacher. Never touch a student without another, adult, witness, unless the student is going to be physically harmed if you do not do it.

This goes well with the article in today's news about making physical punishment of children illegal. This thug should have been fired and had his teaching credentials revoked the first time he assaulted a child. If a kid is constantly sleeping in class it is because of his parents failing to manage the kid's sleeping time. It could also be related to thew stupid amounts of homework students are given. Most Jr/Sr high school students are at school from 7am-7pm because of club activities. They are also given 4-6 hours of homework to do every night. This means they are only sleeping 4-6 hours every night. And then, the teachers start abusing them because they are sleepy and failing exams. The Japanese education system is built on totally unrealistic expectations that results in depressed and disillusioned students, many of which commit suicide due to the pressure and abuse. The students are not the problem. The teachers and their unrealistic expectations are the problem.

Bit of a pattern, grown up children to old parents, parents to very young children, school yard bullies, work place bullies, its a society that really needs to chill the hell out.

Some teachers just take out their stress on the students and the teachers cross the line because the line becomes blurry after years of being around students. There should be a test for the teachers to make sure they are in the real world and not fading into a grey area where they cannot judge accurately. It is never the students fault because they are children. Their brains have not matured yet. But the teachers, one would think, would have matured.

Punish him for sleeping in class by putting him a sleeper hold?

So does the teacher have teaching  skills that are boring and puts the student to sleep or is the student just not getting enough sleep at home ?? Having a parents / teacher meeting would be better then choking the kid.

Looks to me like he could use some guidance counselling himself.

I'm sure he bowed very deeply and apologized to his superiors after the previous incidents. How can you fire him after that?

Is he going to write 'I will not abuse my students again' 100 X on the blackboard like they do in America? Does he promise to be a 'good boy' from now on out?
