Police in Osaka said Tuesday they have arrested a 33-year-old junior high school teacher on suspicion of assaulting a 13-year-old student. Police said Hiroyoshi Omatsu choked the boy at around 11:30 a.m. on March 8 in a classroom, Sankei Shimbun reported. The boy's parents noticed bruises on his neck when he returned home.
Police said Omatsu, who is the boy’s homeroom teacher, admits to assaulting the student, but denies choking him. He told police he called the student into the classroom during recess and punished him for sleeping in class. He was quoted as saying, “I scolded him many times, but he wouldn’t change his behavior.”
The Osaka City Board of Education said Omatsu is also a guidance counselor at the school. Since being hired in 2009, he has been reprimanded twice for physical abuse toward students. The education board said it will take disciplinary measures after further investigation of the incident.© Japan Today
