Tokushima Prefectural Police have arrested a 32-year-old junior high school teacher on suspicion of indecent assault after he kissed a junior high school girl without her consent.
According to police, Masashi Taho has admitted to the allegation and that he knew the girl was under the age of 16, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said the incident occurred in a building (not at the school) at around 3:50 p.m. on Thursday.
A spokesperson for the Board of Education said, "We are very sorry about this, and will do our best to take care of the student's mental health.”

I wonder whether a minor in Japan can legally grant consent to an adult for a romantic kiss? Or is the minor considered to be too young to offer legal consent?
For example, would it be criminal for an 18-year-old to share a romantic kiss with a 15-year-old?

I wonder where in hell they find these teachers from?

So, if she had given her consent, it would have been OK?

Breach of trust.

Women are weaker than men. High school girls are weaker than women. Have this guy kiss his cellmate.

That was exactly what i was thinking.

And Webter's defines consent as, among other things, as "to give assent". Not exactly the same as indicating a shared positive sentiment.

Not sure how that's relevant but ok. Thanks

Without consent? No thanks!

He probably read mangas for the past 20+ years that “taught” him, that is how you get a girl. You force yourself on an unsuspecting school girl, who has zero interest in you, she will resist at first, then she will fall in love with you.

So is it ok if that being done with consent? Since still junior high, parent consent will be needed.

riveting details in the story

It is quite common in Japan for teachers to have relationships with students.

Some of my teachers when in primary schools would kiss me if I recall. But it was about "like" kiss not love/sexual ones.
Kiss is natural way to show gratitude or admiration.
It is no more acceptable these days but I find it sad.
There is no indication about the circumstances how it happened so if it is sexual predation, he shall never get close again to children and get fired of course.
Otherwise mental health is not challenged because of one kiss itself (if no violence). Or else don't come to France Lol.

They are born with a sex drive they cannot control as a frustrated adult. This problem is more common than you imagine. Come on, get real!

Oh no, not again. Said it before and I'll say it again, these sadistic perverts get these jobs to be near to their victims.

"We are very sorry about this, and will do our best to take care of the student's mental health.”
It would seem to be the teachers’ mental health they need to be concerned about.

yikes, what schools did you go to?
lostrune2
Where was the kiss? On the forehead? On the hand? On both cheeks?
Don't forget to perform a "kabedon" - works 100% of the time

Unfortunately, some people will vilify natural, healthy affection to fit their agenda.

I know, right? P3do teachers for Elementary & Middle schools in Japan are not prosecuted when they get caught penetrating their female students. They're either suspended for a few months, receive a pay-cut, or simply gets fired. Japanese schools tries to do cover ups to protect the reputation of the schools, & avert blame from parents. Is it due to teacher shortage? Or are there other excuses?
But if you're caught littering, your face will plastered on Japanese Twitter for weeks with 2 million views, 'cause you are only a lowly Gaijin. And Japanese are all xenophobes, and don't forget.. racists.
