Japan desperately needs a sex offender registry and this guy needs to be on it. He should never be able to get anywhere near children again, let alone be a teacher.

Some information is missing here, what kind of members-only social network is that? Are there restrictions for minors to sign up? About minors, how old was this girl? Not the same if she is 10 or 20....

Of course, as a teacher especially, you should never ask for such kind of pictures from anybody, regardless if minor or not. What a stupid person...

It needs something but those registries are probably not the answer.

The whole point of those is that it is permanent. So there is no restitution, no rehabilitation. If you do a crime and get put in prison for it. You get released after a while, "rehabilitated" and ready to "integrate into society". That's the plan, right? Punishments are to fix things, to repair things? That's how civilised society works, right? If not, we should go back to public hangings, and town square whipping posts.

On a sex offender registry, there is no "getting off the list" no hope of a normal life after 10 years of therapy. It can ruin lives. So ask yourself, if someone was at risk of going on such a list, would they be more or less likely to go further with their crime, given that they're screwed anyway?

Like, if the punishment for fighting with someone was life in jail, and the punishment for murder was 5 years.... there's probably going to be an increase in fatal fights.

Japan NEEDS something, but that's not the solution.

Using the internet to groom minors carries a minimum seven year jail term in Australia. This creep will likely get a three month pay cut of 20% and have to make an apology with a deep bow.

Not many countries are doing this, only about 12 countries or so worldwide (UK and some of their former colonies) and such a registry is only open to the public in USA and nowhere else.

It's complicated - registered for what and for how long - it depends on the severity, case by case. Laws are different from country to country. For sure this is a major legal paperwork to define that, especially if the accused is a minor or/and a female.

It's difficult with all these social media to create a guideline about what is still acceptable and what not using the internet without any physical contact, living in different countries, using fake profiles and exchanging only chat and selfies ....

In some of these countries which created such a registry, it turned out as a chaos with a long list of people of any gender and age who often were accused and registered for rather absurd reasons.

Why do all responses to these sorts of stories have to be mindless torch and pitchfork level calls for abuse just short of death when what we are looking at is CLEARLY a mental illness? What is it about sex that causes ... minds to react in ways that even premeditated murder doesn't elicit? I think that Shakespeare said it best in "I think thou doth protest too much!" when we see the shrillness and narrowness of the responses. And the 'solution', or at least A solution, is exactly what we see in this story, EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN in the reality of the Humanity it is possible to encounter in Life and teach them what to do when such behavior presents. This girl did just what one might hope. So-called 'innocence" is just another word for criminal naivete imposed by adult ignorance and leaves children at risk of those whose sexuality has been distorted by nature or their own experiences of childhood sexual abuse. How can ANY rational way to deal with this type of mental illness be found when the only response is an impulse as irrational as the objectionable behavior itself?

It was first thing I had in mind : are my girls mentally able to discuss with unknown people, in the street or on the Internet ?

In all cases, I am in charge and responsible for their behaviour. Parental guidance does not start after the new environment discovered.

We all know there will always be creeps on the Internet, forever.

Does that mean people have to pay? Or the girls get paid to join?

Sounds like this sort of thing can be easily tracked if it is, and authorities should be cracking down more on the creators oF this site first.

Some of them take advantage of their position to help students, some to help themselves.

Many children nowadays know more about computers and internet than their parents, who do not know how they can control such activity by their children - especially if their children are using WiFi networks outside their home and creating fake profiles in chat-rooms.

Of course it also depends how old these children are. It is a big difference if a minor is 8 and still in elementary school or a 17 y/o high school girl. We cannot always only blame parents for what children are doing.

Alas, this seems pretty typical. Social media sites seem to be made for perverts like this. Jonathan Haidt has some interesting lectures about how this is especially dangerous for young girls. In this case, good on the girl for ratting out the pervert.
