Teacher arrested for throwing volleyball at girl’s face

Police in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, have arrested a 50-year-old high school teacher on suspicion of assault after he repeatedly threw a volleyball at a female player’s face.

Tetsutaro Kuniyasu, a teacher at Chiba Prefectural Matsudo High School, was arrested on Tuesday, Kyodo News reported. Police said Kuniyasu, who lives in Tokyo’s Minato Ward, has partially denied the allegation.

According to police, Kuniyasu threw the volleyball at the high school girl’s face during team practice at a university gymnasium in Tokyo at around 2:30 p.m. on December 26. Other students said Kuniyasu repeatedly threw the volleyball at a close range.

Kuniyasu was already arrested for inflicting bodily injury on the same volleyball player on June 29. The girl reportedly suffered bruises after being it with a volleyball. The Prefectural Board of Education deemed the incident an act of corporal punishment and decided to take disciplinary action against Kuniyasu on June 22. Police added a second charge against Kuniyasu after a further investigation into the December incident.

And three weeks later he is back on the job doing the same crap? Heads should be rolling at the BOE and school as well.

But let me guess the coach is one of those "untouchable" coaches who has teams that regularly qualify for prefectural tournaments, and have teachers AND parents willing to turn their heads to his abuse because his teams perform well.

this article is very unclear.... dates rather mixed up.... nevertheless.... offence last December, arrested in June this year?

The notion of coaches have the right to be rough and tough on their athletes should stop already. I really don't get it why J-coaches love to inflict a lot of unwarranted violence on their players. I remember reading an article where high school baseball players performed better when they made their own training regimen as opposed to the ones made by their coaches which included a lot of military-style punishment calisthenics. I get it that it's meant to build mental strength, but you'll get more bang for your buck if you actually trained properly.

What it probably means, in the convoluted manner of things here, is that the coach was initially "arrested" on June 29th, and in the course of the police investigation, he was found to have committed the same offense last year on December 26th. Japanese police "re-arrest" suspects when adding on charges.

There is much missing from the article, as the December date and time are rather specific about time and date, meaning to me that the cops have evidence or witness statements, to corroborate the events and timeline. Not just "he said-she said" .

Also, he was not arrested, if he had been arrested, he would be in custody and in jail. What has probably happened is that complaints were filed against the guy, and in the course of "investigating" the complaints found the previous incident as well.

When Japanese police arrest someone, they are put in jail. There is much lost in translation. After a while of living here and reading articles like this, you learn to read between the lines and "understand" what is going on, even though the article may state something differently.

I think I may have unraveled the mystery here. The BOE decided to take disciplinary action on June 22nd for the December incident. Which means up to then, there was no police involvement I would bet, and the coach was not removed from his position, and took retaliatory action against the player for him being disciplined.

After which, the player or someone filed a complain with the police, who in the process of their investigating the June 29th incident, found out about the December one as well.

what kind of "teacher" is that???

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Tough coach... Don't do it !!..

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Things have slowly improved re these assaults over the past few years - but still occur regularly enough to not be uncommon.

Thankfully the "beatings" I know as facts from 10 ~ 15 years ago - esp in baseball - seem to have disappeared, but bullying/harassment/belittling still occurs.

I doubt "arrest " leads to automatic jail in all cases in Japan.

{see commentor above }

I doubt shoplifting an ice cream, for example, would result in bail refusal.

As to the teacher involved in this case,....maybe he should be in custody.

'hierarchy' in this place is a true nightmare, japanese think they can do whatever they feel like to other human beings simply because they are 6 months older in the job or they're in charge of a group activity that meant to be fun. So much time and energy wasted walking on eggshells in this place, I thank God everyday I'm out of the rat race and will make sure my son will have a happy, carefree childhood as I had. Our house has always been filled with smiles. Put up with daily abuse from total strangers because they are your "senpai"? you gotta be out of your mind

This, have to teach our kids that a system like that is wrong, no matter how many people go along with it because they're too afraid to speak out.

Partially denied the charge???

deemed the incident an act of corporal punishment

No, it was a physical assault on a minor.

This teacher had previously been in trouble for physically abusing the same student? Why was he still in his job?

9 ( +10 / -1 )

In yo face!

I think the penalty is the student's parents should be able to come to the school and slam him with a volleyball 50 times in a row.

Fun for all!

How does one "partially" deny such a charge? He either assaulted the kid with a volleyball or he didn't. Considering the kid ended up with bruises on their face, he's guilty and therefore should have been dismissed, fired, and jailed. I'm repeatedly disgusted by how people in Japan use the hierarchy to abuse and lord over those younger or of lower rank than them. It's nothing more than bullying.

Ever tried to control a bunch of teenage girls? At 50 years old he probably has no idea of their subculture. I remember my English teacher forcing Shakespeare on our class, so we locked him in the book cupboard. He must of had big stress. Hope he doesn’t have dog…kick the dog mentality.

It seems to be purely japanese thing.

say quasi emergency. as other example.

you cant be little pregnant, you may be pregnant or not pregnant.if this guy hit kid with ball/not first time/ than he DID and need be punished!

This Kuniyasu creep deserves to be stomped. Nothing less.

Rodney - Ever tried to control a bunch of teenage girls?

Thats’s exactly the point! If he doesn’t know how to conduct a class without physical abuse of the students he should not be a teacher. He should be filling potholes on the roads.

yeah until you do it to the wrong students face, and their father comes and gives you some tough justice of their own

no just an encounter by a masked messenger one night, snaps them out of violent ways , when they know violent repercussions come their way in return, simple physics,

every action has an opposite and equal reaction

Let's seeif I have this straight. This scum threw volleyballs at students on:

December 26/June 29 - Same student

Arrested on June 29th?

There are many things wrong with this picture. The fact that BOE allowed his employment is beyond disgusting. Anything from the parents of the student. "An act of corporal punishment?" What in the world is with that kind of corporal punishment? There's the huge length of time before he was actually arrested. If the student were my daughters, I would be fuming at this scum and the BOE. No excuse for this behavior.

You know, when I was at school we had some complete aresholes for teachers, but none of them were like Japanese sports teachers... what is wrong with them? Do they resent the kids? Are they hitting out because they feel that they failed to get into that team?

They probably suffered the same abhorrent treatment and abuse when they were students and are now using their authority and rank to exact revenge. Its been known that some who are bullied become bullies themselves.

I think this is fair.
