isn't any murder a hate crime?

I’m bummed out to the max.

All I can do is shake my head and pray for the three victims.

A very tragic end to the year for their families and friends.

Terrible. It wasn’t random. From other news outlets it’s sounds like the killer doused the home in kerosene either before or after entering. RIP.

Oh god, what a horrible Xmas.

Notice 2 Japanese were murdered as well? Abe was assassinated out of "hate", and he isnt Korean, nor are any of the victims here. Looking to stir something up in your confusion?
ableko45
Good point, hate doesn't have to involve just Koreans.
I guess when you have a foreigner killed in such a horrific manner i think you have to at least pose the question whether it was a hate crime. I don't know because we don't have the facts. Hopefully they will release his internet records. I don't think we should eliminate hate as at least one component of the motivation here though. Hopefully I'm wrong.

OK that's enough news for me today.

Cases of Japanese killing foreigners in Japan, or anywhere in the world, tend not to get much local coverage unless the foreign press start to make it an issue. If the unfortunate occurrence had been vice versa that would be another issue. Sad all around.

How tragic . . . and on Christmas Day.
RIP

Why start out with Temple University is sad? Why not just focus on the people who died? Everyone is sad!
ableko45
Yes. But "Hate crime" also has a specific legal definition when a victim is targeted for being or being affiliated with a certain racial or ethnic group. Is it significant that the suspect targeted a western car and also killed the half-white daughter? Of course i don't know the answer.

Racists often see those who associate with other ethnicities as “race traitors”, and think those people should be eliminated too.
Of course, Japan being Japan, the killer will probably say that the victims were disturbing the “wa”, and so had to be eliminated.

It's this a hate crime? And isn't most hate in Japan aimed at Koreans? It's confusing.
