Chavalit said Japanese authorities had rescued the women,

Shortly before putting them in detention hell to languish for months until they finally deport them bound and gagged. They may well wish for their old job back. They may have even gotten some money out of it, but the Japanese authorities will probably confiscate that.

Japanese authorities. My heroes.

Delighted he is caught, now I hope any women he may have trafficked to Japan will be located and returned safely to their homeland

The demand for,and the supply of prostitutes is controlled by the crime syndicates in Japan-it is massive! The supply from Thailand is just a drop in the bucket.Thailand is also a country where prostitution is rife! To suggest that the Japanese authorities are ignorant of this collusion is laughable.

Japan is recognized as having one of the most severe human trafficking problems among the major industrialized democracies. I wish we would see more arrests and focus by the Japanese government.

Unless Japan makes official committment to clean up the crime syndicates (Yakuza) first, this will be an endless war.

They will try to find another supplier of prostitutes. I am always wondering why Japanese government is not aggressively trying to remove these bad individuals from society. Prostitutions, porno, drugs, murders...........Sigh..........

Yes,.. YOUR absolutely RIGHT..globalwatcher,..

Prostitution itself is illegal in Japan but there is no penalty in most cases.. (売買春そのものに刑罰は設けられておらず) Wikipedia Japan.

and the Japanese ganster?

I hope all the "Yakuza are the nicest people I know" posters have a good read of this.

Sigh, here in the US, we set up some enforcing sting operations to catch those who are involved (both seller/buyer). Whole things are taped and these individuals are on a TV "Reality Show" for public to see. Some of them are teachers, lawyers, politicians and doctors. Surprise!! Why can't you do the same? This has been very effective enforcng method here in US.

CrazyJoe: Forced prostitution and sex slaves are illegal.

globalwatcher: I am always wondering why Japanese government is not aggressively trying to remove these bad individuals from society. Prostitutions, porno, drugs, murders.........

cos they are only in power because of them. this society is controlled by the mafia... i wonder how much free prostitutes they get if they do favours... plus the money kick backs.

what is so new about this? thai pros are everywhere in japan. how do u think they get there?

CrazyJoe: Forced prostitution and sex slaves are illegal.

That's correct.

By making prostitution illegal(mostly since the early 20th century, with notable exceptions), neither the supply nor the demand are eradicated. Rather, the "industry" is driven underground into the black market world of gangsters and crime families. Decriminalization or legalization takes the power out of criminal hands. Then, regulation can improve the industry.

Chavalit said Japanese authorities had rescued the women, all in their early 30s, when they busted a network run by the Japanese mafia.

So what is happening with the Japanese mafia side. Is the thai guy giving up the goods on them?

Take a wild guess as to why not. Who do you think is making money out of this? Who do you think is paying them to look the other way?

Not surprised that Japan is a transit and final destination for this, but v shocked to read it is also a source. Japanese women and children being forcibly taken overseas to work in the sex trade? Really?!

This isn't just prostitution. These women were sex slaves. Human trafficking is the shame of even first world countries.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Wow... I wish I could meet one of these women. I would show them how to get the hell out of here undetected.

"Forced to become sex workers." Right...

So where are the Japanese arrests? Maybe they heard the Secret Service as coming to town?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Techall, you might be onto something. But remember, the SS only got busted because one of them refused to pay for services rendered.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Just legalize it??

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Legalize trafficking in persons?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Man's inhumanity to man. I wish we would all live by the golden rule. Not the one that says "He who has the gold rules" but the one that says "Treat others as you would want to be treated".

Sodesuka is right and, to expand on this, as long as people are willing to pay money for sex, drugs, gambling, etc. there will be crime organizations who are willing to provide it. While legalization might solve some of the problems it will cause others. It's an ongoing debate as to which is the lesser of two evils. But, in this case, slavery is never right.

How do the Thai prostitutes get visas to come to Japan? It is very hard for any youngish Thai woman to get a visa if she goes through the normal channels. The requirements are extremely strict even if they are married. Do the yakuza have a special way of getting them visas?

In Bangkok's infamous Patpong area there is one street full of bars for Japanese. If you are not Japanese, they will not let you in. Are they yakuza owned? Is there any connection between them and visas and trafficking to Japan?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

gaijintraveller: The gangsters pay off the Japanese embassy staff in Thailand to get the visas.

JT,

What about the story on the yakuza getting busted for this????

Oh wait silly me, forgot there for a second

This might explain why the Japanese ambassador in Bangkok is driven around in a Merc then.....

Fadamor May. 16, 2012 - 02:37AM JST. Legalizing prostitution would go a long way towards eliminating this aspect of organized crime. In Germany prostituion is legal. Most laws against prostitution are based on morality issues, but government will NEVER be able to successfully legislate morality.

Compare to countries in Europe, the reason why prostitution is illegal in U.S. is because women have too much power. The majority of men in U.S. would welcome legalization, but the women would have a fit. And they would pressure their men into stopping it. Can you imagine being a Senator and voting in favor of legalizing prostitution? And even if the Senator was single, and had no family, he still has to consider all of the women who are able to vote now. Everybody knows that in other countries where it is legal, there is a dramatic decrease in STDs, drug use, violence, unwanted pregnancies/abortions, and child/human trafficking. The women receive health benefits, have weekly check-ups for STDs, drug tests, use birth control, work in a safe environment, and contribute to society by paying taxes. There is no downside to legalization. A lot of people claim that prostitution is illegal simply because it is immoral, but the government doesn't care about that. There are a lot of things that are completely immoral but perfectly legal. Just look at gambling and alcohol. Two perfect examples. The government makes a fortune off of people's immorality through tax. And they could do the same thing with prostitution, but they don't. And the reason is because their wives would kill them.

You're grossly underestimating men's willingness to legislate morality, and religious tradition in the US.

Back on topic please. The U.S. and Europe are not relevant to this discussion.
