Though unemployed he might not necessarily be poor..he could be leeching off family, or as I have chosen to believe he was actually the head of a grand pyramid scheme involving the sale of used women's shoes, and the apartment in the article was just one such warehouse that was used for the intermediate storage of fresh goods. But the international goliath Amway then started moving from cosmetics and into clothes and other things and they didn't like the little empire that Sato had been building up under their nose, so they tipped off the police to remove the menace.
