Happens all the time in Japan, from what I've heard and seen on the news. Tire/tyre slashing is actually quite common. Dead of night. (Paint scratching is another way to take out your frustrations with life.) You do sometimes see on TV individuals getting caught after the intallation of a surveillance camera. They usually have some secret agenda to justify it.

Another wacky crime in Japan...

We once parked our car at night in an apartment complex in Hachioji. A Nihonjin was standing in the parking lot looking angry. We asked in Japanese if it was okay to park here. He said yes, and we went inside. Later, as we drove out of the parking lot, there was a loud banging noise from the front end. I pulled over to check. Somebody had loosened all the lug nuts on one of our car's front wheels. Fortunately, we found out as soon as we moved the car. Thank God we were not on the expressway. We didn't report it 'cause we could not prove who did it, and there was no injury or damage.

Better tires than flesh.

At least it wasn't a group of people who were slashed.
The local tyre sales outlets must be wringing their hands in glee!

sensei258 Similar thing happened here. Picked up a guest at Narita and on the expressway back to Tokyo he said the wheel was making a strange noise. I pulled onto the hard shoulder and checked. Someone had loosened the nuts on the left rear wheel and it was sooooo close to coming off completely.
Oh, and faulkmore, if 100 tires/tyres are slashed at 15,000 yen a pop, that's a lot of money someone has to pay out, 15,000 bucks, and think of all the gasoline wasted as they all drive to get new tires/tyres. That surely is a crime.

It was perpetrated by the local tires shop... ;)

Business in tyres, going up in Fukushima.

Wasn't there a case about 3-4 years ago where the perp in one of these slashing cases was the local tire shop owner complaining that "these new tires lasted so long people didn't replace them anymore?" Cui bono? Look for the Laurel & Hardy (Mr. Tire Man) lookalikes!

I Agree. I would be looking very closely at the Iwaki's tire salesmen.
